Teacher claims to receive teachings from Brahma god

I wanted to share an unusual experience I had yesterday, when I attended a one-day retreat taught by a Dr. Lalith Ranatunga from Sri Lanka. Apparently he is very popular there, where he can gather crowds of up to 500 people. He bases his teachings on interpretations of the suttas, from which he draw...

Re: A certain clumsiness with memory

Hello,

Thank you very much for your replies. Yes, perhaps I just need to redirect the attention to the object at hand, rather than get carried away with the usual meditation object (eg. the breath).

A certain clumsiness with memory

Hello, I have recently observed that as a result of my practice I have developed a certain "clumsyness" with regards to remembering things. For example, I tend not to remember street directions very well anymore, because instead of paying attention to street signs and landmarks I apply mindfulness t...

Recommended Sutta Nipata book?

Hello,

Could someone recommend a book with the complete Sutta Nipata? I have been unable to find a translation by an author that I know and trust.

Many thanks, with metta,

Dear Vens. Pesala and Dhammanando,

Thank you for your replies and for clarifying the question. My impression had been that he waited four years, but might indeed not have been the case.

Why did Seniya wait four years for going forth?

This passage at the end of MN 57 recently caught my attention: [Seniya, after having been offered the going forth in fourth months by the Buddha]: "Venerable sir, if those who belonged formerly to another sect and want the going forth and the full admission in this Dhamma and Discipline live on prob...

Re: Gradual practice

What strikes me about these synopses of the graduated training is how often the jhanas and recollection of past lives are mentioned, in contrast to insight practice and establishment of the four foundations of mindfulness. This seems to be very different from how the graduated training is generally ...

Re: Possibility of Stream Entry

My teacher, Chanmyay Sayādaw, will give a talk at Wembley Vihara next Sunday. I still remember something he said in a talk that he gave at Chiswick Vihāra, many years ago. He said that only one person was hopeless of attaining nibbāna. He then asked the audience if he should say who it was. I suspe...
