Re: Drowsiness

Walking meditation. As a bonus it is also a good exercise. Switch to a light kasina (use a flashlight*) as a meditation object until you don't feel sleepy anymore. (*) I suggest a flashlight with a cree q5 led. This led can produce a rather bright white light. Also an zoomable head flashlight so tha...

Re: Are kalapas and dhammas dependently originated?

So temperature born matter has temperature or the fire element as it's cause (I think this is "utu" the same as your translation's "physical change", and "tejodhatu" for the "fire element".)? So, rocks and weather for example can be produced dependent on temperature or fire? So a rock is dependent ...

Re: A perspective on understanding the Buddha's words

Your view expressed appears to be one influenced by the "meditation traditions" which gained prominence in the 20th century. As has been said many times here at this forum, the suttas show people becoming stream-entrants whilst listening to and reflecting upon the teaching of the Buddha. Those who ...

Re: Does Visuddhimaga teach Satipathana?

Samadhi (this is where the 40 kammatthana stands): 2. Purification of mind (citta-visuddhi) If I assume this is to be the Samma Vayama, Samma Sati and Samma Samadhi, then no direct mention of Sati Pathana. Any reason for it? Citta visuddhi is samma samadhi. Satipatthana is samma sati. Although samm...

Re: Does Visuddhimaga teach Satipathana?

Thanks. Can we lock these seven purifications to Noble Eightfold Path or the Noble Tenfold Path? In other words Sila, Samadhi, Panna I think I just did write it above. Sila: 1. Purification of conduct (sila-visuddhi) Samadhi (this is where the 40 kammatthana stands): 2. Purification of mind (citta-...

Re: Does Visuddhimaga teach Satipathana?

Does Visuddhimaga teach Satipathana? If yes, where do you find four frames of reference on 40 meditation objects? The Visuddhi Magga is based on the satta visuddhi: Sila: 1. Purification of conduct (sila-visuddhi) Samadhi (this is where the 40 kammatthana stands): 2. Purification of mind (citta-vis...

Re: Does anything like the Visuddhimagga but light on momentariness exist?

The Visuddhimagga is a work of staggering genius. However the heavy reliance on and exponential increase in number of moments per second can be daunting. Are there any comparable Theravada works that do not rely as much on this doctrine? Or that use longer, easier to grasp lengths of moments? Perha...

Re: Are kalapas and dhammas dependently originated?

What causes a kalapa or dhamma to arise and cease? Kalapa is not the same as dhamma. Dhamma is everything. Dhamma is either conditioned or unconditioned. Uncoditioned dhamma is Nibanna. Conditioned dhamma are citta, cetasika, and rupa. Rupa that appear together are called kalapa. § 6. On the Origin...

Re: Neutering animals.

Yes it is bad kamma. Why? First Buddhism morality is different from common morality. Buddhist morality is based on alobha, adosa, amoha (non selfish, non harm, having right view). The reason for neuterization? (1) forcing it for the benefit of the owner, this is lobha (selfishness) (2) forcing it fo...

Re: Awareness of awareness

Thanks. That's the point of course, to see the arising and ceasing, but the background awareness usually appears very stable. Though the awareness is stable but the objects taken are changing right. And each object has its own consciousness. The awareness arises and disappear along consciousness. A...

Re: Awareness of awareness

Awareness is sati cetasika, the one that knows that this is awareness, this is its arising, this is its ceasing, that it is impermanent, is sampajjana, which is panna cetasika. Both are sankhara-khandha. Being aware of these is dhammanupassana. The purpose of vipassana is to see the arising and ceas...

Re: Why Vitakka and Vicara is not mentioned in Satipathana (MN10)and Mindfulness of breathing (MN118)?

Vitakka & vicara are already practiced since the first tetrad, but the appearance of rapture is the sign of the attainment of the first and second jhana. When the counterpart sign appears, putting forth effort until the attainment of the first and second jhāna, in which rapture (pīti) predominates, ...

Re: Calming body fabrications - what does it mean?

In meditation the only task is to focus on the meditation object. Sway from it and you are not meditating anymore. The first tetrad of anapanasati is samatha anyway. It would be good to be careful with overly complicated answer.

Re: Calming body fabrications - what does it mean?

To make the breath as calm as possible either automatically or consciously. The calmness of the breath actually correlates with the depth of the meditation where the point when we don't feel the breath anymore (and instead has acquired a replacement nimitta or sign) is when our meditation progress t...
