Re: How to get rid of the idea of eternal life?

How do I get rid of the idea of Nibbana as eternal life? Goofaholix is right. It doesn't do much good to try to get rid of the ideas that happen to pop up. These ideas have their causes and conditions, and they'll keep on rolling along until the causes and conditions change. Gil Fronsdal relates ho...

Re: God!

Once I started to read some Buddhist texts and words of Buddha ... It just feels like this is the religion or philosophy I have been looking for, but that I didn't didn't know existed before. It just seems to fit me better. To be clear though, I have no complaint against Christianity at all, it's j...

Re: What do Buddhists think of Jesus Christ?

While there's some good discussion in this thread, I think it's unfortunate that some have chosen to make fun of Jesus Christ, the central figure in Christianity. Regardless of whether one agrees or disagrees with Christian viewpoints, from a Dhamma perspective, it's not helpful to make fun of other...

Re: Bodhisattva Path: Historical Aspects In Theravāda

Tilt, the point is that if we are going to discuss another tradition, it's important to explain the language of that tradition in the context in which it was intended. By focusing on the perceived "sectrarian claim" behind the term Hinayana, you are providing an incomplete picture of the other tradi...

Re: Bodhisattva Path: Historical Aspects In Theravāda

From the Theravada standpoint, taking the suttas as the touchstone, this analysis is seriously flawed. It seems to assume, though it is unclearly stated in the above, that a bodhisattva practice is more compassionate, more concerned with others welfare than other. There is no justification for such...

A matter of personal practice

"Just like the Mahayana, the Theravada holds the Bodhisattva in the highest position." From Ven. Dr. W. Rahula . In any form of Buddhist practice, the approach we take only is beneficial to the extent that it inclines toward liberation. Each of us uses terms and ideas as part of our particular path ...

Re: Lovingkindness: Question.

Joseph, I'm sorry to hear of your loss. Even though seven years have passed, this can be a difficult time of year. It might be helpful to think of it this way: Your memories of your wife, your feelings for her, all of that is a part of you. You can start Metta meditation with yourself, wishing yours...

Re: A Buddhist Ontology of Christian Claims Using the Pali Canon

If this thread is going to devolve into a game of pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey, then let's at least be clear about which "tail" we're trying to pin on a Christian's practice. If "the tail" is "its god," then I think it would be worthwhile to make sure everyone is using the term "god" to refer to exact...

Re: Agree with this view on morality?

Hello modest, With respect to individual practice, one danger might be to view morality as something separate from and independent of oneself, something "out there." The reason this type of view can be counterproductive is because it reinforces the notion of a self in the first place, a self that st...

Re: Bad resources

I don't think it's about "points of view that challenge our own" that people are talking about... it's more the above criteria. I had a different impression, namely that it was about subjective criteria as well as these relatively objective ones that you list. Much of the thread seems to be about o...

Re: Bad resources

I just cannot bring myself to burn them or giving them away. Giving them away is actually kind of fun. I gave a bunch to the local public library a few years ago. That was an interesting experience, after having hoarded books since childhood. Then I gave away the bookshelves. Come to think of it, t...

Sure. Sometimes we're not yet capable of finding value in points of view that challenge our own. So we make the best use we can, and that might involve propping up wobbly things or making sure doors stay where they belong.
