Re: Is there a good reason to call western monks Ajahn?
By all means continue using Ajahn when in Thailand or if the parisa consists largely of Thai speakers. But as Buddhism continues to establish itself in the West, the Thai connection will diminish. We could use the honorific Master which is already common for spiritual figures. But this adds in anoth...

Re: Is there a good reason to call western monks Ajahn?
Greetings, another correct term such as Bhante? Bhante isn't correct either, because bhante is a first-person form of address, and to speak of Bhante Such-and-Such in the third-person is incorrect. My preference is for "Bhikkhu". Metta, Paul. :) That's true. I was thinking of situations where peopl...

Is there a good reason to call western monks Ajahn?
That question...Many western Ajahns have lived most of their monastic lives outside Thailand. If we want Buddhism to be established in the west instead of being a Thai cultural relic, should we not use the Pali equivalent Acariya or another correct term such as Bhante?

Re: Insight as seeing
I am not a native English speaker, but even the word "in- sight " seems to have the faculty of seeing built into it. Why the centrality of seeing (as opposite to other sense media)? is it because our deluded self is often felt to be located behind the eyes? I think it is a natural evolution of lang...

The text was the Abhidhamma. The transmission is complex, but I will ask pilgrim to comment on how it affected the Sri Lankan revival as he has read the book. Braun's condensed account: https://www.spiritrock.org/document.doc?id=5335 Certainly Ven. Nyanaponika and later western monks living in Sri ...

Re: Bhante Sujatos and karmic snobbery.
Being hit by a falling TV is due to someone else's carelessness but whether you die, suffer serious or minor injuries is due to your past kamma. There is no Group kamma. Hundreds of people can be at the wrong place when it is hit by a tsunami . But kamma determines who survives and who doesn't.

Re: Ajahn Ganha : A Nephew of Ajahn Chah ?
In Thailand it is the custom to refer to each other as uncle, grandfather, nephew, auntie, etc. Ajahn Ganha who is known for his metta practice is actually not related to Aj Chah by blood. Are these not saying about a blood relationship ?? I can't be certain but this was what was told to me by a bh...

Re: Should people be exhorted/persuaded to practice the Dhamma at all?
"Those for whom you have sympathy, those with whom you communicate, your friends, intimates, kinsmen and relations - all should be told about, grounded in, established in the Four Limbs of Stream-Winning. What are these four? Faith in the Buddha, faith in the Dhamma, faith in the Sangha, and virtue ...

Re: A bird chanting Buddha name ?
Parrots are well known for the ability but many other passerine birds have the ability to mimic the sounds they hear. Mynahs are another common example. Some mimic the sound of predatory birds to scare away competition.

Re: benefits of cow urine
https://ccim.med.ucla.edu/?page_id=149 I have no doubt that some of the traditional prescriptions work. As an Asian, I used them when young. But the problem with much of alternative medicine sold commercially is the lack of control over its ingredients. Few people who take these things know what th...
