Re: problem breathing when focusing on breath.

I've read about problems like this several times, but there never seems to be anything conclusive. I remember reading an article that said that certain people get anxious rather than calm focusing on the breath. May want to see a doctor specializing in respiration. If you feel comfortable enough, tr...

Re: AN 8.11 Verañjā

I do not see one to whom I should pay homage, or for whom I should stand up, or whom I should offer a seat. For if the Tathāgata should pay homage to anyone, or stand up for him, or offer him a seat, even that person’s head would split. Haha I've seen this before, but any more context for this? Mas...

Re: We need new rules

There is always a struggle between liberal and conservative right? For example look at Catholicism, not supposed to use birth control yet around 90% of sexually active catholic women have been on it? They are not so much reevaluating their tradition but ignoring what they want. What are the things t...

Re: SN 1.2 Deliverance

Well nirodha samaapatti is cessation of feeling and perception. That seems to require anagami. While this is cease perception and consciousness. So I guess this is something like the arahant version of nirodha samaapatti... Once this vital link is broken, that is, when consciousness ceases with the ...

Re: SN 1.2 Deliverance

Following DO I suppose it goes like this:
perceptoin/conscousness destroyed (?)->
feelings cease and appeased (?)->
so delight (clinging) ceases->
existence (becoming) exhaused

So starting at the beginning, what does it mean for consciousness/perception to be destroyed?

Re: The Heart of the Issue

Well, you are certainly not alone. DO is a mess to make sense of. The most worrisome part are the links from ignorance to name and form. My inclination is just to say they don't make sense, but I think it's important to say that they don't make sense to me. However we hardly need them because the pr...

Re: Minimalist living

I'm a bit fan of minimalism as a style "Minimalism is any design or style wherein the simplest and fewest elements are used to create the maximum effect" But I think we can be careful to distinguish this from renunciation. I'd say this guy is more renouncing a lot based on his society, but certainly...

The little I know about the guy I generally like, but he also bugs me a bit... How about this one? Where is this even coming from? Psychoanalysis vs Buddhism: the latter assumes that your anxiety doesn't have anything important to teach you. https://twitter.com/alaindebotton/status/38419399963000012...

Re: Why Theravada?

I think the problem is that if it can be categorically proven that the Theravada is the closest to the original teachings of the historical Buddha then the Mahayana Schools will have to concede that they are an elboration that take on board His teachings, nothing more. But has the authenticity of t...

Re: Liberal attitudes and meditation

Reality has a well known liberal bias...says stephen colbert. The guided mediation was specifically on "feeling connected to the environment". Hadit has done research on liberal/conservative: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vs41JrnGaxc So I guess it would basically go something like this: Mediation ...

Re: Shut-down

From what I understand this mainly comes down to Boehner. A clear cr could pass the house, but boehner won't allow it because if he does the 80 or so far right members might challenge his speaker-ship. http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/newsdesk/2013/10/what-is-john-boehner-scared-of.html So the ...

Re: The Pleasure Trap

I would think banana and apple are pretty similar and healthy foods. As Thanissaro writes about we all feed on different experiences, and nibbana being the end of this feeding or outside of it is the highest happiness. The issue is more with certain foods warping the brain over the long term... "A n...
