the counting doesnt come from buddha it comes from commentaries, theres a difference. and those commentaries arent mahayana so dogen isnt really saying anything too foolish

none of us really have any real idea of what the buddha was like, we have the sutta collections but we have no way of asking questions of the people who were there to remember those things questions to what exactly he was like, or what he could do etc. could he really lick his eye brows or what ever...
