Re: Good printed translation?

I too hope that Bodhi's AN is not vaporware. Really hopin' Maybe, though, I will reconsider that anthology. My two favorite volumes of the Nikayas are the two oldest volumes: the Samyutta and the Anguttara, as they explain much more than some people give them credit for. And much of that clarificati...

Re: Good printed translation?

Numerical Discourses of the Buddha: An Anthology of Suttas from the Anguttara Nikaya by Bhikkhu Bodhi available from amazon. :anjali: I've thought about that one because I've read that it is a very good collection, but have decided to wait for the big one from Bodhi... although I have wondered just...

Chris and Tilt:

Thank you for the prompt replies. I looked up that one by Ireland up on amazon (canada) and it was listed for 150 bucks or there about. The local book store usually sells for more, so I didn't check with them. Don't I look a little silly.

Much appreciation.

Good printed translation?

I've been looking at "the group of discourses" by K.R Norman as put out by the PTS. This is the 2001 edition. Has anyone got an opinion on its quality -- fidelity to the texts meaning is of primacy. Oops. Stating the obvious again. Also wondering if there is a good translation of the Udana out there...

Re: Why did you choose Theravada?

Hi Jack When you get some time, have a look around for Richard Gombrich's How Buddhism Began: the conditioned genesis of the early teachings. It'll be well worth your while. metta Ben Stop, Ben, Stop! I can only afford so many books  Just ordered the Visudhimagga and "The heart of Buddhist ...

Re: Why did you choose Theravada?

As for this disagreement, isn't it silly? More than a little  Yes, it is. ...why should Buddhists get a little uptight with such an offhanded statement? Fear? Insecurity? intolerance? I wouldn't place the blame on any of those. I am a religious Buddhist, and as such I do take the existence ...

] What part of "I'm too busy" and "I'm not interested" don't you understand? Yes, yes...I know, saying this just proves that my claim is baseless. It is cheap talk to make such claims and then being "unwilling" - unable - to back them up. You are correct, your claims are baseless. I have two turkey...

Re: Why did you choose Theravada?

I was also not clear when I said "convert me, if you like that idea". It was meant to create some momentum. I'm already converted; no Mahayana troll am I. Wheh! That's a relief. I gather though that you remain unsatisfied with the posted answers? Problem being is that it takes a lot of time and ene...

Re: new interpretation of Dhammapada 183

TNHs translation does seem awfully soft and accommodating to those that satisfied with a half-ass effort. Very much, it seems, geared to the hobby Buddhist common in the west. Another translation: From http://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/kn/dhp/dhp.14.budd.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);r...

Re: Why did you choose Theravada?

Let me reverse the question. Alan, why are you not practicing Theravada? Hear hear! This is a Theravada forum and you seem to have two possible motives: a) you really wish to know, b) you wish to look down your nose at the tradition and its practitioners. So, What is it, exactly, that you [agree] w...
