Re: Post meditation, what to do?

Set a timer on your watch (phone), and when it goes off resolve on a 10-30 minutes of 'clear awareness'. Being clear of your bodily, verbal and mental actions. Do this once or twice a day, making it longer and longer or more and more frequent. That is one suggestion. I find it helpful to classify my...

Re: Free Dhamma Books?

like 10 years ago there were a lot of places to get free dhamma books, now most are either gone or have e-books. i'm not even sure how to get Ajahn Thanisarro books anymore Write to Metta forest monastery. I received some books from there this very day, in fact. I'm up in Canada, and they sent to m...

Re: Career in the military?

Will you be obliged to fight for your life as a medic? I would not suggest it, myself. Consider the state of mind you'd have if you were under attack and fighting to survive, and what that would mean if you were killed at that time. http://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/sn/sn42/sn42.003.than.html"...

Re: What position do you use for sitting meditation.....

Half lotus descriptions list the right leg on top of the left. I do left on right, 'cause my right doesn't fold down low enough (I think I messed it up as a kid).

Are there any specific reasons that right on left is preferred?

Re: Thoughts occuring in Jhana?

It might be that thoughts occur but not fall within the categories of the hindrances. This might be Bhrams meaning of that 'coarse' thoughts cannot arise. It is right that some thought must occur in the first Jhana, but it is directed thought and involves the object of meditation.

Re: I'm a new vegetarian! Some questions...

Well done Tex. My own transition is a little bumpier - it comes with living wih a household of meat-eating barbarians. I had a near mutiny the other night when I served up tempeh burgers. Definitely not my finest culinary effort and didn't taste as good as I remember from my macrobiotic days. kind ...

Re: What New Year Resolutions have you started?

I've resolved on practicing vegetarianism. In terms specifically about the Dhamma: continue daily meditation (and daily practice overall), read the sutta pitika down to the sutta nipata.

There are others but I'll spare you the long list of all my failings

Re: Pristine Theravada

Do you think the Theravada canon and commentaries are the pristine teachings of the Buddha handed down unaltered from the time of the Buddha? Why or why not? I think the cannon is close to the Buddha's teaching, but not unaltered. This is because people are faulty and the depths of time are deep an...

Re: application of meditation

Hi all: I hope I have this posted in the right place. Here is my question: Everything I have read about the practice of meditation has led me to believe that you are only to focus on your breathing and other thoughts that come in can be recognized and passed by....then go back to your breathing. Ok...

Re: Spontaneous generation?

I am most interested in the part about "certain human beings". The notion of spontaneous generation is familiar enough, but I became curious with reference to humans just a week or two ago. I presume that this refers to human forms created by psychic powers, e.g. by Cūlapanthaka Thanks for that sto...

Re: Spontaneous generation?

Thereductor, I just checked my hardcopy for footnotes and there are none pertaining to this section. Much of the sutta is related to expounding what skills the Tathagata possesses that sets him apart but there is no clear connection to that argument in this section...at least as far as I can tell. ...

Re: Spontaneous generation?

The term Spontaneous Rebirth Opapātika ) appears in many places in the Pāli Canon. There is no such weapon as the Pāli Cannon. :) Belief in spontaneous rebirth is one of the ten elements of mundane right view , which is a stock phrase repeated many times in the Dīghanikāya. That there are beings bo...
