Re: The Buddha's Mom

I just got done reading that the Buddha's mom gave birth to the buddha while being a virgin. The same thing as the virgin Mary mother of Jesus. Is that true? Is that the accepted belief? :anjali: in the original scriptures it says that he was born, that's it. his mother was married to his father so...

Re: metta meditation

Greetings folks, I've a question on metta meditation. On another post (can't remember which one) someone wrote that metta should not be sent to one of the opposite sex. I do "blessings to..." meditations and metta meditations each day and do these for people of both sexes as well as "all beings eve...

i'm willing to bet that there is going to be a huge upsurge in answered threads since checking your own threads means sifting through the main board index, so you see a bunch along the way instead of just going directly to your posts.

Re: How do the masses understanding their feelings & emotion

oh totally. not only that, most people blame their actions on their emotions! "sorry i yelled and threw a rock at your car, i was angry." ooookay... so you're like the hulk and have no control over yourself when angry or what? or just blind emotion "i'm so angry about blah." and there's no end to it...

Re: against art

giant gold buddha images when the buddha said i don't want images of myself Source? this always kills me. there are millions of quotes and people have no clue where they come from. some of my favorite "quotes" of the buddha fall into this category. it's frequently assumed many are made up but then ...

Re: What would you advise...

"in the buddhas words" by bhikkhu bodhi is a wonderful compilation of relevant suttas arranged in a logical framework. whereas the nikayas are arranged by length, not content, so they're all over the place. don't get me wrong, the nikayas are the most profound works in existence, but for day one i w...

Re: What is the benefit of learning Abhidhamma

What do you think about abhidhamma and it's benefit? It's just my personal opinion, but I consider the Abhidhamma a form of delusion, and I think your doubts about it are well warranted. But seeing that you have a teacher, the matter has to be dealt with with extreme delicacy. If your teacher is ki...

Re: Is meditation the only way to reach englightenment?

this is a HUGE debate. the suttas teach that it is the only way... kind of. the buddha said one must meditate. but there are suttas where he says the methods within can get one to nibbana and makes no mention of meditation, examples are satipatthana sutta (non-jhana meditation anyway) and metta sutt...

Re: against art

why does the vinaya discourage monastics to practice or take in art? everything but the dhamma is to be dropped as much as possible. heck the buddha even compared simply not minding the satipatthanas to a monkey who wanders into human territory and gets stuck in a human's trap! if it's not dhamma p...

Re: Is it possible for practising Buddhists to have fun?

what are buddhists practicing to erradicate? suffering (dukkha) what's the opposite of dukkha? sukkha (can be translated as joy) it is even a characteristic of some jhanas =) :goodpost: if fun is defined as jhana or metta or other dhamma things then by all means, buddhists should be having fun most...

Re: If you couldn't be a Buddhist, what would you be?

Hi all. When I examine the basic teachings of all the masters of all religions, I find that their core message is one of love, compassion , and respect for all beings. At the time that's all that existed, the tag of a religion came after their deaths whereupon all the beliefs dogmas etc. we're added...

Re: Is it possible for practising Buddhists to have fun?

This is a spin-off from another thread about Ajahn Brahm, because it wasn't really relevant to that topic. Is it possible for practising Buddhists to have fun ? I'd be interested in reading other peoples comments about this. Thank you. i find this to be a complicated question. when one is having fu...

I fell in love with the dhamma around 18. i started w/ goenka retreats and got obsessed with that for a few years. then i became disenchanted when i started researching into their claims and so moved to thai forest monasteries. i did a pilgramage in thailand and burma and then transfered from JC to...

Re: anapanasati first four tetrads

Hi Alan, so the ones that arise naturally in the present are easy enough. what about the ones that don't? you say samadhi helps to see them, how so? I don't know how exactly this happens. AFAIK, samadhi helps to encompass all experience, with all observed rises and falls. :anjali: oh okay. thanks.
