Re: Latest announcement from Amaravati monastery. (Good dhamma inc)

Firstly I want to state my respect for these Maha Theras, they, and most especially their teacher Ajahn Chah, have done wonderful things in bringing Dhamma to the west. I cannot easily calculate their worth to my own growth and practice in the past decade+ years I've been a practitioner. I do have s...

Re: Do young arahants have to bow down to senior monks?

yes , monastic procedure and protocol has nothing to do with the attainment of the people following it. another example would be , even if a young monastic became an arahant, they would still need wait until they have 10 vassa to ordain others. quite frankly, I don't believe the arahant would go aro...

Re: What are the rules for monks surrounding the vassa period?

Chanh, do you not have an acariya that you live in dependence on? If you have access to the vinaya, like the Book of the discipline, check int he Khandakas section for Vassa & Kathina rules. Or since you are online, they are on sutta central at these links, all you need to know, if its not there, th...

My first monastic Carika/Tudong

A few weeks ago in early July I did my first Carika/Tudong, I don't think I need to explain what that is on this particular forum. I documented my journey on my blog, complete with pictures and video, both for myself to learn from my experience, and for anyone else who may be interested in doing a w...

Re: Romantization of the modern and historical Monastic Sangha

Yes, it's a Thai custom (which only applies to Bhikkhus and women, not Bhikkhus and men), not a Sri Lankan one. I've heard humorous stories from Bhikkhus trying to navigate a group of mixed Thai-Sri Lankan lay women without insulting the Sri Lankans by using a cloth, or shocking the Thais by not......

Re: Romantization of the modern and historical Monastic Sangha

I think this is a common thing for many westerners/convert Buddhists who want to become monastics, they have a very idealized version of what monasticism is, and the more they experience it, the more they see the reality. This has been my experience as well as many others i've had contact with. The ...

Re: Ordination experience of Westerners

Contrary to popular belief on this forum, monks exist in other places besides Thailand haha.

I reside in America, with Bhante Gunaratana, at Bhavana Society.

Re: Ordination experience of Westerners

[... yet I read that for some folks, meditation was easier as a layman? Is this a common experience?? Yes that's a common experience, but not universal. I remember myself and Venerable Jayasara and Venerable Cunda and Ajahm Brahm all had that experience when we first went to the monastery. After so...

Re: Staying 5 years with your teacher after ordained. Where does this come from?

You are not bound to be under any one specific person, you can leave your original preceptor, or even monastery, and go under another acariya, but you must live with a senior monastic the first five years or else it's a breach of the minor rules. ( I'm currently half way though mine, bhikkhu 2 1/2 ...

Re: Staying 5 years with your teacher after ordained. Where does this come from?

The rules are not in the patimokkha or vibhanga, but the khandakas under the going forth section( same place where above quotes come from) I believe off the top of my head. You are not bound to be under any one specific person, you can leave your original preceptor, or even monastery, and go under a...

Re: Regarding paying off ALL of ones debts first.

i don't think it is Yeah its not, banks are the biggest thieves and they are covered by insurance. In ancient lore leaving debts was forbidden because the debts were usually transferred to the family to pay off, and that would cause them suffering to pay it off,and thats not fair on family members,...

Re: Mahanikaya vs Dhammayuttika

Some of their practices are in fact unnecessary, like only eating one meal a day (most mahanikaya temples eat 2 meals, just b4 noon. which is perfectly allowed in the vinaya). Friend, It is not allowed to eat two meals but one can eat a portion of the meal at a later time: https://www.wisdompubs.or...

Re: Bhikkhuni in the First Buddhist Council

I posted a similar question in SC. Bhante Sujato came up with something very interesting. =========== Like most texts, the canonical accounts of the Councils do not mention the presence of bhikkhunis, and only monks are said to be present. However one might doubt this, since there are multiple plac...
