Re: Wisdom and Compassion

Bout dang time you embraced the far superior engine and transmission of the less [colorful] vehicle! Unwarranted assumption - have always admired the ideas & practices he mentions - which are not unique. Now if he only vowed to do that for the benefit of endless beings during endless lives... :anja...

Given names vs screen names

Not a big deal, but even though I have been on this site for years, I am careless about real names that are sometimes shared. I would like to give a little personal touch by 'naming' so and so. But if the given name is rarely used and my memory is porous... well, you see the "torment" I suffer. I bi...

Wisdom and Compassion

Not sure where this inspiring teaching should be put. It is probably familiar to many here, but the sutta (SN 47:19) is brand new to me. Nyanaponika Maha Thera was a most worthy one!   http://bps.lk/olib/bl/bl034_Nyanaponika_Protection-Through-Satipatthana.pdf EDIT - couple of clarif...

Re: Contraception, Abortion and the Dhamma

This snip from MN 123 suggests to me that some mothers, not only Buddha's mother, are 'virtuous' when with child: 9. “I heard and learned this from the Blessed One’s own lips: ‘When the Bodhisatta had descended into his mother’s womb, she became intrinsically virtuous, refraining from killing living...

Re: Contraception, Abortion and the Dhamma

Sex is always unwholesome. "Always"? Piffle and nonsense. Rahula, son of the Prince, became an Arhat. Even that Prince who became Buddha had parents whose sexual contact resulted in the One who gave us the Dhamma. Buddha also gave us the Sangha most of whom are a blessing to we worldly ones. They d...

Re: Contraception, Abortion and the Dhamma

Whether the gandhabba is a being, stream or point of consciousness, preventing it from rebirth will surely scramble kamma. It may not be as bad as killing, but does not appear to be in harmony with rebirth kamma and thus unskillful.

Re: Important Terms of Service update regarding political matters

So my basic point is that even when words seemingly align with the Dhamma, if they are spoken in a heated political climate, they are charged with the contextual meaning and therefore controversial. Are we ignoring or forgetting the Mind? There is no 'heated political climate' nor does 'contextual ...

Re: Important Terms of Service update regarding political matters

Gad, like pulling teeth is understanding with words on a screen. Last effort - supplying supportive ideas, concepts or notions suggested by Pali text quotes is what I (& Paul?) mean. You seem to want explicit Dhamma words linked to a Buddhist person's Dhamma words. This is close to impossible and si...

Re: Important Terms of Service update regarding political matters

What? Trump’s words absolutely cannot be traced back to the scriptures. He does not base his words on Buddhist Scripture. The idea that anything Trump says can be explicitly traced back to the Pali Scriptures is ridiculous. Whereas every single English word written or spoken by anyone nowadays also...

Re: People are ...?

"basic, default assumptions" are fine for personal pondering on what human nature is or if it is.

However it is better not to assume or presume when meeting an individual. Just be empathetic & harmless toward them, even helpful if possible.

Re: Forest of Pearls

In addition to all the Dharma quotations compiled, there are 47 or so 'miracle' stories in volume one. A mix of spiritual, psychic & other realm events, this sort of literature was popular in ancient China.
