Re: The right kind of meditation

Hi greggorious My whole life I've been either in a state of extreme depression or anxiety. Everyone is in this state really, except arahants. Some people are good at hiding ennui, distracting oneself from it, postponing dealing with it, staring it down, pretending to ignore it, running from it... yo...

Re: The right kind of meditation

Cultivate faith. Read good literature and watch powerful films, interest yourself in other peoples' stories. Understand that we rise and we learn; you cannot fail to see this in other lives. Empathy in the struggles of others plants seeds in one's mind, plants strong kamma for good. Relax and follow...

Re: Is Vajrayana/Mahayana the work of Mara?

Avoiding enlightenment to get something better is not a Vajrayana teaching. Achieving enlightenment, then returning to help others is the Bodhisattva ideal, at least AFAIK. Yes, Justsit, and along those lines, the Boddhisattva ideal seems to simply develop an already strong aspect of Pali Buddhism....

Re: Is Vajrayana/Mahayana the work of Mara?

That's the one thing I don't get, the idea of avoiding enlightenment to get something better. It seems worldly. I can intuit how people might have come up with the idea, but I can't intuit how it could be correct. Maybe I will understand later. It does appear that certain Mahayana writers have tried...

Re: Cessation of perception and feeling and Nibbana

The other day a thought came to me about just this question. I think it may be something similar to near death experiences - perhaps nirodha samapatti and what happens then shows the mind that there is nothing to fear, thus nothing i.e. self, to protect. But then, work needs to be done on actualisin...

Re: Buddhism's effect on the Will

Hi there Thaibebop Buddhism makes me write more... it's important to use the philosophical teachings alongside the practical teachings. i.e. Use anatta in your meditation, when observing stress. Don't use it to kill the songbird in the cage. Don't extrapolate your own views from anatta, like saying ...

Re: my goals and ways of practice

I think people are trying to help, and none of us are perfect. So it's good practice to try, little by little, to react to less of the negativity one feels coming one's way, to say, ok, maybe I can let that go. It's really easy to interpret the way other peoples' priorities and understandings expres...

Anger with a forum poster is such a pale thing when considered in the vast light of what you have trained to do.

Re: my goals and ways of practice

hi, the head doesn't unblock in terms of allowing the pleasure in, however - the tension can be relaxed, with some difficulty at 2nd/3rd and with ease at 4th. hm, so how does one go about seeing it? if this is similar to the dissociation techniques, and 'who hears this sound' type of inquiry, i don...

Re: my goals and ways of practice

2nd: after continuing to release what seem to be blockages of breath the pleasure spreads itself throughout the entire body except for the head, which i can't seem to unblock Hi there. Did the head unblock after this stage? It's not clear from your writing. From a practical point of view, and this ...

Re: No Ajahn Chah

have heard that on one occasion the Blessed One was staying near Savatthi in Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's monastery. Then a certain devata, in the far extreme of the night, her extreme radiance lighting up the entirety of Jeta's Grove, went to the Blessed One. On arrival, having bowed down to him,...

Re: Pali Term: Nirodha

I got interested in the etymology of the word, which seems to support interpretations of backing down and letting go, which would allow a poetic usage of the word 'yielding', if not a direct translation. I did quite a lot of checking and actually have a post of references already written, though bei...

Re: "Living in the Present Moment"

On an internet forum, would it be when one's heart is in the present question, not in the future reply?
