Is offering alcohol, drugs and smokes etc to a friend or another person, making demerits for your self?

Is offering alcohol, drugs and smokes etc to a friend or another person, making demerits for your self? This is based on the following statement by Ven Pesala in another discussion. ========== If he offers to the Tathāgata or to his disciples what is not allowable for them, this is the fifth way tha...

Re: Your top five religions (with a short reason)?

Isn't Buddhism core teachings teaches a pessimistic way of life ? It appears like that. But when you progress in the path you may start to feel that Buddhism is the most optimist religion. Many people take the wrong way. Especially the people in Sri Lanka. Perhaps it may due to the lowest gravity s...

Re: /study-psychiatric-diagnoses-are-scientifically-meaningless

Mental illness has a variety of causes. It can be caused by severe early trauma, for instance, which the same approach as above often ascribes to bad kamma… It's a sad sad way to look at mental illness, IMO. Agree. But I was thinking about the modern depression related to abuse of drugs and the use...

Re: Buddhist monks receiving money as a modern Standard practice

If he offers to the Tathāgata or to his disciples what is not allowable for them, this is the fifth way that he makes much demerit.
Thank you, Bhante
I thought this is referring to food, not money.

Re: Buddhist monks receiving money as a modern Standard practice

Giving money to monks also comes under the category of adhammadāna.
Wow!! Could you give some reference?
Not I trust you but if I want to make this point in the future I like to have some reference.

Is there a being?

Is there a being? Buddha taught emptiness (Anatta) and the existing being. We had many discussions about this in the forum about this discrepancy. In the following video (in Sinhalease language) Ven Gotama clears this doubt. According to him what is exists is ignorance and due to that, we have the g...

Re: A Buddhist monk (Dalai lama) hugging an American nun.

Perhaps you can initiate it like Dalai Lama!
I meant to put two of your hands together. (that is what Dalai Lama normally does)
Perhaps, in this case, maybe the nun initiate the hugging and Dalai Lama could not escape from her.

Re: Buddhist monks receiving money as a modern Standard practice

By the way, I still give money to monks.
Nobody has rejected it so far!!!
I think monks should communicate the Vinaya rules to laypeople when accepting money.
If I am a monk I may accept the money on behalf of the temple and communicate that to him and ask my helper to give him a receipt.

Re: A Buddhist monk (Dalai lama) hugging an American nun.

I can't recall any Buddhist story where Buddha or Arahant hugging anyone. Dalilama is not Buddha or perhaps and Arahant so it may be ok for him perhaps. I think you have to ask this question from Dalai Lama. I think there is a Sutta to say that you can't involve in sensual acts without attachment. (...

:focus:
Sorry to sidetrack the discussion.
My top choice as very obvious is Theravada.
My second choice is any religion that promotes harmony, peace and generosity. (but not with a gun hiding inside the robe)

Re: Buddhist monks receiving money as a modern Standard practice

and that being said, I'm not perfect, I've had to use money once or twice myself, once in bringing things to the dump for the retreat center, and once when I was stranded after missing a bus. I recognized the reason I had to use the money, and did not give myself an excuse, I still had to confess a...
