Re: Theravada Buddhism and Social Engagement

It is my view that since the Buddha expounded alot of rules of behavior for monks and that he did so over a long period of time (I think) that from this we can assume that monks did pretty much whatever was allowed and that sometimes it went beyond what the Buddha thought was appropriate in which ca...

taking refuge directly to awakening?

Is there a case given in the scriptures of someone taking refuge and then immediately achieving stream entry or higher?

Re: right view of the fruits of release of mind

My view is that obtaining release of the mind leads to knowledge of release of the mind, which in turn leads to right view about release of mind. The reason why I say that the end result (release of mind) leads to a right view is because in the kaccayanagotta sutta describes supramundane right view...

Re: A portrait of a dysfunctional family

Many things in Thailand are illegal but everything is pretty much freely accessable. This probably means that the tatoo artists are not giving enough money to the police or perhaps that the police want to shut down certain tatooooists in preference for others (either family members, associates, or t...

Re: Why would people do that ?

I went and looked at the site.....did not see any bashing...not any...none...zip....makes me wonder why anyone who would describe it that way....but maybe my judgement is premature. If someone could go there and find some bashing and show it to me I would be very glad to see it. Over there some text...

Re: right view of the fruits of release of mind

Rowyourboat, What do you see as the difference (if any) between: 1. Right view of the fruits of release of mind 2. Knowledge of the fruits of the release of mind 3. Obtaining the fruits of the release of mind 4. The rewards of the fruits of the release of mind Sutta references are as always apprecia...

Re: Fox mange

My view is that killing the fox and somehow deluding yourself into thinking that you have not violated the precept to kill is much worse for you than approaching the fox with complete knowledge that you are going to willfully violate the precept against killing...being sensitive to the moment and do...

Re: Does the Arahat experiences affective feelings?

Theravadidiliana, I think we could safely say that the Buddha ( aka Tathagata) was an arahat and in the quote below it says that "the Tathagata is satisfied and is sensitive to satisfaction,". This is surprising to me and I have asked here on the forum for explanation but really haven't gotten anyth...

Re: Why would people do that ?

Maybe these people believe their message is so important that behavior doesn't matter. I have yet to see a double nicker here that was promoting a "message." That certainly has not been the case with the person who has been the most egregious. From the little I know about this I would say that I te...

Re: How has Buddhism transformed the experience of guilt/shame?

Zavk, I think that original sin and making a big deal out of guilt and shame is more or a Roman Catholic thing than it is a Christian think generally speaking. I was raised by a Christian family in a mainstream protestant church (family went every sunday, mother very active in church affairs) and di...

Re: right view of the fruits of release of mind

Hi Chownah, A stream entrant is said to have Right view. If we consider this to be the DO and DC (see kaccayanagotta sutta), then we can say that the Dcessation (or non-arising) happens at the point of attainment. So while successive insights are accumulating into anicca, dukkha and anatta the fina...
