Re: Is hell and hungry ghost realm to be taken literally?

.so perhaps one could have right view without being attached to it...I guess...I don't know.... Actually in MN 22 in "raft simile" and "snake simile" Buddha shows that Dhamma is to be grasped firmly and properly, attached to.. and ONLY after you have gotten to the other shore (arahantship), only th...

Re: First Jhana...a description

Zom,(and everyone) You wrote: "That is I stand for that idea of completely silent but fully aware mind in the jhana. " I think this is interesting. To say the mind is silent can be taken to mean that there is no auditory thought object arising....but it can also be taken as a metaphor for a mind tha...

Re: First Jhana...a description

I was surprised to find this reference to first jhana which seems to indicate that not only is there directed thought happening but also evaluation....for me the concept of evaluation means a fairly complex mental event.... As I see it, this is an incorrect interpretation of Ven. Thanissaro. This "...

Re: Is hell and hungry ghost realm to be taken literally?

Zom, "Having no attachment to right views makes you like a boat without a rudder " This sounds good....have you detached yourself from right views and thus verified this through direct experience? Seems like one can have things without being attached to them...so perhaps one could have right view wi...

Re: First Jhana...a description

Manapa,
Do you know where you got the non-movement notion?...a reference and/or link would be great. I guess the movements of breathing would be excluded....any explanation of why?

Re: little lies, big lies

I've enjoyed everything I've read by Sam Harris until now.....what was offered above is a real disappointment for me.....all of it seems to be way below his usual standards...for instance: "Therefore, we have divorced the most important questions in human life from the context in which our most rigo...

Re: little lies, big lies

Edit: I've noticed that the connection to the topic is pretty hard to see....I composed it in response to the comment that some abstractions have value...posted by Prasadachitta. My intent is to underscore that all language is abstraction and that this is at least part of what the Devil was getting ...

Re: The mechanics of what we call "belief"

Could it be that we "believe" in anything that helps us maintain the things we cling to.....or that helps us dispel the things we are averse to?

Re: First Jhana...a description

What I'm wondering but did not emphasize enough is whether from the description I posted does it seem likely that first jhana can be attained or maintained OFF the cushion? It seems to me that since directed thought and analysis occur then it seems that one could take the process of walking (for ins...

Re: Is hell and hungry ghost realm to be taken literally?

Rowyourboat, My view is that the try to be a "better person" is contrary to the "have no doctrine of self" teaching which as you know is a very important concept in fulfilling the path. Maybe the idea of becoming a "better person" would be helpful for someone who has not bought into the "have no doc...
