Re: Poverty in South Asia and Buddhism

Could the fact that the region was by and large ruled (and exploited more than developed) by France and England for a long time have something to do with poverty?

Re: Metta and Predation

I don't worry about predators....I thought that most adults were similarly not concerned about predators....probably not all though.....if there is danger then take precautions I guess but really what are the chances. I wouldn't let a predataor eat me.....why would I?.....I don't think that there is...

Re: Boredom!

I just spent a week flat on my back being very sick and it was really very very boring when it was not wrenching. The first three days all I could do was try to sleep but probably got less than 2 hours sleep a day (working at it 24 hours a day) and then I started gradually sleeping more but not doin...

Re: Can Buddhism exist without the doctrine of reincarnation?

Is Buddhism dependent on the doctrine of reincarnation? If reincarnation does not exist then does that mean that the Buddha Guatama was mistaken and his teachings are fundamentally flawed? Are there Buddhists who don't believe in reincarnation? 1. Is Buddhism dependent on the doctrine of reincarnat...

Caffeine is not an addictive substance in that it does not change the body chemistry of most people so that its absence causes bad reactions....having said this I suppose it is possible for individuals to have bad reactions when their daily dosage of caffeine is disrupted.....it is probably best for...

Re: Mindful Universe: Quantum Mechanics & Participating Observer

For those who feel lost in a discussion of this quantum type stuff and would like a beginners explanation of what this kind of topic is about I have posted below a link to a youtube animation called "Dr Quantum - Double Slit Experiment ".....it explains in a fairly understandable way how an experime...

Seems like Stapp is doing alot of theorizing built upon theorizing built upon theorizing......like a house of cards...card upon card upon card. I haven't been able to get to the bottom to see what actual experience has lead him in this direction and if there have been discoveries along the way which...

Re: What is beauty, actually?

What is ugliness, actually? Could it be that beauty is to attachment as ugliness is to aversion? Why is it that "beauty" is so often referred to but even the word "ugliness" seems foreign from lack of use....maybe it is because we are attracted to beauty and repelled from the ugliness?....so could i...

How on earth do you become good at this game?

Is it just practice?

From what I've seen, it relies a lot on intuition because trying to win through brute-force logic will take way more time than you'd want to spend and in which case you're better off using a computer to solve it.

Re: Only in America

Buddhists worship idols.
Christianity denounces worshipping idols.
Christianity developed from Judaism which also denounces worshipping idols.
Lots of anti idol worship sentiment in the USA.

Re: Practicing while uninspired

Something to consder, EVEYONE practices when they are inspired....the people who eventually quit practice when they are inspired as do the people who eventually do not quit. THE most important time to practice is when uninspired as this is EXACTLY what seperates the "winners" from the "also ran's". ...

Re: What is beauty, actually?

On the Mickey Mouse Show they offered a very good approach to understanding exactly what beauty is......they would just say , "Beauty is as Beauty does....that's what Wise Men say...." I think that by contemplating this wisdom will arise and all will be reviled.....

Re: Be Careful What You Wish For

Sativa, make a printout of this topic and give it to your sister asking her for a reply. chownah Wouldn't that be a a little too confrontational? I think it would stir things up more than is necessary. I would recommend a polite decline like Ben said. @sattva: In addition to the polite decline, you...
