CNN Heroes Award

I just went to the CNN Heros Award site and nominated Charlie Sheen for his tireless work in trying to kick his drug habit and develop some self esteem(note: to be honest I must say that actually I nominated him for another reason but this reason I have presented here is more in keeping with the dha...

Re: Don't be put off the Dhamma by anatta!

Pulga,
It seems that the Buddha taught the Noble Eight Fold Path to puthujjana.....it would seem very odd for the Buddha to teach the Path to people who could not follow it.....I guess.....

Re: Does illegal downloading violate the 2nd precept?

"Does illegal downloading [because it's considered stealing] violate the 2nd precept [which says don't steal]"? ....................... I don't consider copying something which is sent to my home as stealing...I consider it my right........if you don't want me to copy a song then don't send it to my...

Re: Don't be put off the Dhamma by anatta!

I read the Sutta you referenced but don't see how it supports your view that puthujjana have yet to even embark upon the Path.....can you explain? chownah The Noble Eightfold Path commences with Right View, i.e. it is the ariya-puggala who have the understanding of the Buddha's teaching that enable...

Re: Does illegal downloading violate the 2nd precept?

Not necessarily. If the person wouldn't buy that copy anyway, no income is lost anyway. Even if it's not stealing, then when you're describing is just unskillful greed - and that still breaks the 2nd precept last time I checked. Just to remind us what the 2nd precept actually is, since the thread h...

Re: Don't be put off the Dhamma by anatta!

Asking those questions keeps one a putthujjana. Pursuing and waiting for answers to these questions prevents development of the Path. Development of the Path? The puthujjana has yet to even embark upon the Path (Mahácattárísaka Sutta, M117). The sutta in this passage is dealing with manasikára : I ...

Re: Breaking the fourth precept at the water cooler

Ricketybridge, I like the opinion which bodom gave in the quote.....it represents someone's opinion on this issue and it seems to me that this opinion makes sense. I do think though that it is best for one to not totally accept someone's opinion on a matter of Dhamma and not to start thinking that t...

Re: The self?

Curious Dog, I don't think that anyone will be able to give you clarity on this issue. It is one of the BIG BIG BIG issues that people keep fighting with and disagreeing and seems that most people never get a grip on it....in fact alot of people are of the view that if you actually do get a grip on ...

Re: Where is this found?

JackV, If you want to find out more about it I suggest learning about "The Four Noble Truths". It is probably the most basic of the Buddha's teachings and yet it is a comprehensive summary of the entire extent of what the Buddha taught. You can find out about "The Four Noble Truths" at almost any Bu...

Re: The ethics of minimizing suffering and being a "good person"

I'm just wondering how weighty the habitual act of destroying life is while still performing mostly good acts. Doesn't the motive behind the act matter in this context? If I did it because I wanted to cause pain, that's one thing. But to do it "just 'cause," which is why I do it, well, that seems l...

See this BBC news item In a laboratory tucked away off a noisy New York City street, a soft-spoken neuroscientist has been placing Tibetan Buddhist monks into a car-sized brain scanner to better understand the ancient practice of meditation. Bhikku Pesala, Great post...great link....if anyone on th...

So maybe they are enjoying every minute of it, and rather than being "slaves", in actuality are free and consenting participants, in mutual pleasuring, and earning easy money along the way? Let's not forget Ambapali. From the Ambapali Sutta (SN 47.1): When the courtesan Ambapali heard that the Bles...
