Re: Obama: 'Long War in Iraq' Will Finish by End of 2011

I think that really Obama is saying that the US will no longer be overtly involved in the war....I seriously doubt that when the last US soldier leaves Iraq (if CIA is considered as "soldiers" then will this ever happe?) that suddenly peace will break out everywhere in Iraq....sadly the violence wil...

Re: Don't just sit there, LEVITATE!

As Pondera points out there is also a difference in the arrangement of the magnetic fields....existing maglev technology utilizes the repuslion of two like poles (a north magnetic pole will repel another north magnetic pole and a south magnetic pole will repel another south magnetic pole....we say "...

Re: Kamma and vipaka

Sam Vega, In the original post you wrote: "My specific question is about the mechanism that brings this about. I would like to know people's thoughts on how this occurs." I suggest that there is no "mechanism that brings this about."....or at least there is no mechanism that we can rationally unders...

Re: Killing, what should be considered killing? Bacteria, virus?

Cooran, What I do in a situation like yours is: 1. Inform them of the damage they are doing.....yes I actually will think or say "I know you are a rat from your shit and you're behavior is damaging my things and is a danger to my health." 2. Ask them to leave and inform them of the consequences....y...

Re: Paul Williams' On converting from Buddhism to Catholicism

2. Williams is fearful that, with rebirth, the story is over for "me...the actual person I am". In other words, as mentioned above, he is an eternalist accusing the Buddha of nihilism. But he seems unaware that the Buddha actually rejected both these extreme positions. That's actually the core of m...

Re: Killing, what should be considered killing? Bacteria, virus?

I just thought of something....didn't the Buddha teach something to the effect that all beings fear death?.....if he taught that then perhaps if an animal is so undeveloped that they can not have the fear of death then they are exempt from the killing precept?....just wondering....never thought of t...

I think that usually the distinction is whether it is sentient or not.....I'm not sure if there is scriptural support for this or not but it is a common view...which of course points us to the question of how to define sentience......also, in a thread in a forum which is no longer functioning it was...

Re: The Buddha and Occupy Wall Street

At an Occupy Wallstreet official site I found this headline....the "WorldRevolution" part appears in the largest text size used on the front page so I guess this is a major idea that they are promoting: http://occupywallst.org/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; "the only solution is Wor...

Re: Paul Williams' On converting from Buddhism to Catholicism

Since we seem to be slipping into a bit of a metta discussion I guess it will be ok for me to say that it seems to me that this thread is just like over the back yard fence gossip..."he left that sweet Buddhist girl and has taken up with that brazen Catholic hussy......etc." chownah P.S. Re: Buddhist Fury: Religion and Violence in Southern Thailand

I haven't read the book and probably won't....there are alot of people who don't know about the history of southern Thailand.....that region was "given" to Thailand by England about 100 years ago or so I think.....the people there have a muslim heritage and thier customs are markedly different from ...

For those who don't understand what has been said because it is too technical but still would like to know about the basic difference between maglev and quantum levitation I think the answer is that they both rely on magnetism as the force to do the lifing.....the difference is just in the way the m...

Re: "The greatest shortcoming of the human race...

I think the greatest shortcoming of the human race is the inability to add fractions....I have often remarked (not here) that the survival of civilization hinges upon the ability of people to be able to add fractions. You probably think you can add fractions...."Hey, I can add fractions....two fourt...

Speaking of effort......I think that many people think of hard work when they think of effort...I really don't think that this is a good way to think of Right Effort. I don't think that Right Effort is developed by a mental furrowing of the brow and induced tension.....I think that is is aided by ca...

Re: How does a meditator distinguish between..

I think that two key things are awareness and concentration....if your mind is aware and concentrated then you are meditating......if you are sleeping while your mind is aware and concentrated then that is fine....it doesn't matter....some people interpret what the Buddha taught to mean that what we...

Re: Establish a Dhamma Foundation?

Starter, I think you should follow your dreams but do it with eyes wide open. Sounds like you are not willing to spend your life in a meaningless job and this realization will serve you well IF you can find a way to act on it....it is, however, for most people not an easy task to find meaningful wor...
