Re: vinaya related to cotton ( silkworm)

Should a monk refuse a robe if he hears or suspects or knows that the silk worms were killed specifically to make that robe for him?

Re: The conditionality of vinnana in the suttas - different formulations

According to the suttas, are we "un-conscious" while we're asleep? I don't know. I don't remember ever having seen a mention of "unconscious" in the suttas....maybe there is one and I've just not seen or have forgotten it. chownah I'll rephrase then. According to the suttas, are we conscious while ...

Re: The conditionality of vinnana in the suttas - different formulations

Are you referring to vinnana as the 6-fold sense-consciousness described in DO and the aggregates, or to something else? And what about the distinction between vinnana and citta here? The devil is in the detail. I think that just because any word that the buddha used is translated as "consciousness...

Re: The conditionality of vinnana in the suttas - different formulations

I think that there is a common misconception that the opposite of consciousness is unconsciousness.....and I also think that this conception comes from the common every day ideas about consciousness (and unconsciousness). I think that the buddha's use of the words which are translated as "conscious...

Re: Eighty Minor Marks in Pāli literature

Here's the Milinda-ṭīkā's list, which seems to be in a different order from the sayadaw's. Dhammatthavinicchaya From this reference the buddha proceeds like an elephant, a lion, a goose, and a bull. I think that this would make for a very strange gate.....or are these each seperate gates and if so ...

Re: The conditionality of vinnana in the suttas - different formulations

In the Loka Sutta, vinnana (sense-consciousness) arises in dependence upon sense-base and sense-object, eg eye-consciousness arises in dependence upon eye and form. In most DO suttas, vinnana arises in dependence upon sankharas. Though there are different interpretations of what this involves. In a...

Re: Tathāgata and self case

So what happens to the Tathagata when he dies? Then he will be dead. But what does being dead mean in Buddhism? When it comes to questions about buddhism I check what is said in the suttas......I don't recall any sutta which talks about being dead.......plenty of suttas talk about death but I can't...

Re: Coronavirus

Are ventilators more damaging than help? Perhaps the ventilators are used by inexperienced doctors.... The dr. seem pretty young to be a dr.......could he be showing his freshness and lack of experience and just showing how what happens in the real world can not be adequately taught in med. school?...

Re: Coronavirus

Agree. I can recall a nurse from Italy complained about the ventilators some months back. Many people are dying while on ventilators. It is to know that the ventilator is not a miracle machine. https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2020/apr/29/study-finds-a-third-of-uk-covid-19-patients-taken-to-hosp...
