Re: Pharmacological Aids to Enlightenment

If such a drug existed, I think it's not a violation of the 5th precept, since the full phrase includes "which lead to carelessness". If such a drug existed is idle speculations. The fifth precept is for me a translation trying to make the Buddhas teaching about moral and ethic understandable in En...

Re: What is Mara to you?

Greetings Bhikkhu Pesala, There is also five kinds of Mara in my belief, as you list in the post and explained in the link above (I found the link in one of the earlier posts about Mara in this forum. You was part of that discussion as well). It is the appearance of Mara that is not so clear. Is thi...

Re: What is Mara to you?

However, the suttas are pretty definite that he's an actual being. But I'm okay with not believing everything the suttas say literally. Can't one say eg. that there is nothing left in a being than Mara (does not need to be human)? humans definitely have made a lot of nightmare movies..., or what ab...

Re: I am no thing

Mara's body is our internal voice, he disapears when we watch him dirrectly.
Thanks, Dawn and you also Scott1989. I continue this in a new post, cause I'm also curious about what others might say.

What is Mara to you?

In one of Scott1989's threads I asked him about whats Mara to him. He responded with: I don't really see Mara as a female demon who is trying to seduce me Dawn also answered this question in the same thread, but with: Mara's body is our internal voice, he disapears when we watch him dirrectly. Which...

Re: Pali training rules

If anyone want to believe the 5. Precepts, or other translations to be the exact Buddhas words, or meaning. One must also believe only Arhats translated the Pali Canon, and only Arhats was responsible for the oral delivery from generation to generation before the Pali Canon was written, one can, for...

Re: Pali training rules

translation requires context so a perfect translation of a word may be completely wrong in a particular context. the task of a translator is to extract what is meant, not a litteral word for word meaning which is not always possible! Agree, but I do think not doing both is wrong (at least state a w...

Re: Pali training rules

How are these different? Unless you mean that it is the transliteration you sought?
Why don't you think there are no difference?

Re: Pali training rules

Heroin and MDMA, for example, aren't mentioned; how can we decide whether this precept applies? It seems you are committed to the view that these substances are unrelated to this precept, yes? No I am not. As I read it, the emphasis seems to be on Pamāda - negligence; indolence; remissness; careles...

Re: Pali training rules

the rule is then applied (with correct reasoning)

Where is this connection between the Percept and The Great Reasons of truth? Secondly, It seems that your reasoning should also be my reasoning for some reason, why

Re: Confession

Yesterday my patience also ran out. For me it was my backyard, the grass was getting far to long, and by then I have had enough of that ----. Determined to tell the lawn something about not growing wild I went with stiff steps directly to my garage for my big lawnmower. I fired it up, and started to...

Re: Pali training rules

I agree with Wiki, its text is about refrain from alcohol or carelessness from alcohol. This translation seems also to be supported by other different Buddhist traditions. E.g. the Chinese Mahayana texts just say 'Do not drink alcohol'. And I think the 5 Precept should not be generalised for the goo...
