Re: The first verse of the Dhammapada

Hi Will A related question: in Mahayana abhidharma there is a difference between Mind and Mental Events. Is this the same point being brought out here by Norman's translation - that Mind & Mental Phenomena are not identical? If you look at the Satipatthana Sutta some translate the section on Dhamma ...

Re: Visual: Non-time-delineated model of Dependent Origination

Would somebody please explain to me what is meant by Eye/ear/nose/and so on - Feeling? Craving for certain stimuli contact with certain stimuli and the sense-bases themselves are relatively self-explanatory. But I don't think I fully comprehend the 'feeling' inference.... Are we talking about actua...

Re: The first verse of the Dhammapada

I actually learnt allot about metta from looking at different translations of the Sn 1.8 Karaniya Metta Sutta. I suppose when looking at a translation it is best not to hold the view that one translation is better than another or more accurate! personally I prefer Bodhi and Thanissaro Bhikkhu but So...

Re: The first verse of the Dhammapada

I think that pali is quite a complex language to translate, but allot of the translations have the same meaning simply put "we are what we think" others have just expanded on the understandingusing heart, mind, phenomenon, etc the various different translations shouldn't be disregarded just because ...

Re: what method do you use?

Well originally I practiced the method taught by Michael Kewley (Pannadipa) his method focuses on the Breath and expanded from there here is his guided course on book http://www.wisdom-books.com/ProductDetail.asp?PID=10014 nowadays I look at the satipatthana Sutta and experiment to see what it is ac...

Re: Modern Theravada description

Hi Will Will Writes: Will is a bear of very little brain, so he does not know what or why you suppose. Ok I suppose if you look at the first verse of the Dhammapada you will see why it shifted from an actual place to a mental state! the Jhanas are mind born after all as the Buddha realised before hi...

Re: your daily practice

Well I just try to live by the 5 precepts but when I can the 8 Precepts, it can be dificult due to my job and shifts to live by them fully 100% of the time, but I try to at least live in wisdom, if I find the precepts abit too dificult to follow, and the meditative practice difficult to fit in any d...

Re: Dhamma Books - where do you get yours?

I get mine from Wisdom books (not the publisher) in the uk mainly, http://www.wisdom-books.com/ but quite often I get free books from monestaries I visit, and as gifts, but nowadays I tend to not bother unless it is a book I want, such as a comentary or something I mainly focus on the Suttas which I...
