Re: Pali Canon

Greetings Rick,

Bhikkhu Bodhi has already translated part of the Anguttara Nikaya and I think I heard somewhere he's working on the rest of it? I might be interpreting that wrongly though, so treat it purely as rumour for now.

Re: Maha-Satipatthana Sutta

Greetings Manapa,

Yes, I believe venerable Dhammanando is quite busy at the moment. He is preparing for a (if I remember correctly, Vinaya related) course he has to deliver shortly as well as his busy with his Abhidhamma studies and teaching.

Re: Modern Theravada description

Greetings Will, The Pali term for "skilful means" is upāyakosallasampatti According to Bhikkhu Pesala, it means.. “Skilful means” is the genius that is equal to the task whenever he undertakes to help others. Literally, it is the “attainment of special aptitude in strategy.” (source: http://www.aimw...

Re: New Year's Eve - what are you up to?

Greetings Fede, Resolutions - an interesting question! I think I've only ever made a resolution once. I was about 16 or so, and I resolved to be less selfish. I guess even then I saw the harm in it. Generally if there's something I want to do, I'll do it... I don't need a 'new year' to influence the...

Re: Avatar Covering Posts

Greetings Fede, Are you able to post a screen shot of the problem? You can do this by pressing the "Print Screen" button on your keyboard. Then go into a program like MS Paint and paste it. Then you can save the image (preferably as a JPG) and then come back here and attach the JPG as an attachment....

Re: Incense - Yes or No

Greetings venerable Appicchato , Oh yes, I forgot to include that when I go for meditation at lunchtime at a nearby Mahayana temple I offer a stick of incense to the Buddha. JC ~ Yes, I've used it for that purpose before too... I must have heard a Zen practitioner mention it and thought it sounded l...

Re: Modern Theravada description

Greetings, I know TheDhamma is fond of lists ;) but rather than state a list of what being a "Modern Theravadin" entails I find it's more useful to think in terms of what issues exists where viewpoints deviate from the Classical Mahavihara perspective. According to venerable Dhammanando, these issue...

Re: Pali Canon

Greetings Rick, I'm in the process of going Samyutta > Majjhima > Digha The reason for this order was that I've read (I think it was Ajahn Sujato who mentioned this) that generally speaking, textual studies show that the material of the Samyutta Nikaya is actually amongst the oldest of the Pali Cano...

Re: Visual: Non-time-delineated model of Dependent Origination

Greetings Jack, I agree with the others that you need the category of mental formations to account for all the other mental constituents. In compiling this, I've wanted to keep the scope of development restricted to the suttas, and by doing so leaving out anything that could be considered a later-de...

Re: Visual: Non-time-delineated model of Dependent Origination

Greetings venerable,

Yes, now I'm wondering that too! I'm not ingenious enough to have thought of it myself so it must have come from somewhere. I'll have a think about it.
