Re: E-Sangha

Greetings everyone, I am really grateful for the existence of E-Sangha. I came across E-Sangha after only having been Buddhist for a month. At the time I was pretty adamant about being non-sectarian - I didn't even know what Theravada was when I joined. As it turned out though, my views and perspect...

Re: Anattā

Greetings bhante, Why "speculative"? Surely it's just straightforward logical entailment. I believe it has to be speculative because it involves that which is beyond this world... beyond what you or I can experience by way of the five aggregates, the six sense bases and so on. Hopefully an example w...

Re: Anattā

Greetings Jechbi, All Theravadins accept that the five aggregates, six senses (whichever framework you wish to use etc.) are not-self... Some may infer that because there is no self to be found within, or without those frameworks that there is 'no self'. I don't think people should infer this becaus...

Re: Anattā

Greetings, Anattā... one of my favourite subjects! SN 22.59 - Pañcavaggi Sutta I have heard that on one occasion the Blessed One was staying at Varanasi in the Game Refuge at Isipatana. There he addressed the group of five monks: "Form, monks, is not self. If form were the self, this form would not ...

Re: Different football codes - who are the toughest?

Greetings,

Rugby League has lots of physical contact and frequent low-grade injuries, but if you want increased prevalence of high-grade injuries, you want Australian Rules Football.

Re: Theravadin Retreats (especially Goenka)

Greetings Individual, No, he means stay at the monestary with the monks for a few days. I'm planning on doing this sometime soon myself... (not in this heat though!) I would however recommend doing a Goenka or similar retreat first... the ten-day course gives excellent instruction on the anapanasati...

Re: How can kamma span lifetimes...

Greetings AdvaitaJ, I think the best way to start investigating this is to see how kamma functions in this life time. It is only in the here-and-now that you can observe this phenomenon for yourself. Once you can see that, it's only a matter of inference to see how it spans lifetimes. I'm not sure i...

Re: Bad Kamma

Greetings ShinMeiDokuJoh, Unwholesome mindstates such as those which underpin unwholesome actions (aka 'bad kamma') can manifest themselves in illness. Just by way of example, think about stress and the effects it can have on the body. But of course, as the Buddha points out, kamma is not the only c...

Re: Practise vs suttra

Greetings lppaefans, hope to hear more views ya. :console: :console: Here's something I posted elsewhere a little while ago... I just wanted to open up a discussion on the sharp distinction some people seem to draw between "learning" (e.g. sutta study, Dhamma talks, Dhamma books) and "daily practice...

Re: Satipatthana sequencing

Greetings bhante, croll down to #2 'The Way of Mindfullness'... Take your pick... Thanks. This reminds me why I don't like listening to MP3 Dhamma talks... too slow, dodgy sound quality, no ability to knowingly skim to what you're looking for, no chapter headings etc. We'll see how it goes a...
