Re: Are the Police in the USA out of control?

It is the one year anniversary of the killing of Michael Brown in Ferguson and there has been a fair bit of coverage here in the UK. The Guardian has created this website: The Counted People killed by police in the US http://www.theguardian.com/us-news/ng-interactive/2015/jun/01/the-counted-police-...

Re: Are the Police in the USA out of control?

I think the main problem is that the USA needs to tighten gun control and remove the majority of guns from private ownership: http://theconversation.com/how-us-gun-control-compares-to-the-rest-of-the-world-43590" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return ...

Re: Health considerations and meditation retreats

You'll eat once a day, no need for a diet , unless you have a medical condition... You don't need free weights, use body weight( calisthenics ) for exercise if you must exercise. Body weight is all you need anyway.. You'll get more out of it though if you drop your attachment for the health and fitn...

Re: No Such Thing as Gay Adultery?

"Grounds" for divorce... I think it's all nonsense! If people want to be together then let them. If or when they have had enough, then let them divorce.. If people are divorcing, then they are asking for the ending of a contract which previously bound them. There need to be "grounds" or reasons for...

Re: New Meditation Center

Dhammarelax has never been rude in all of his many posts here. He made a statement about thanissaro bhikkhu that was an honest opinion and not intended as insult. I don't think anybody here is saying that dhammarelax is a rude person or was intentionally being rude to anybody. I certainly wasn't in...

Re: What Is the Meaning of Your Username and Avatar?

Bad Scooter is a name Bruce Springsteen gave himself in one of his songs: tenth avenue freeze out.
My avatar is a picture of "the boss" taken back in the 70's.
It's just a way to give recognition to my Jersey routes.

Plus I really like the boss

Re: New Meditation Center

. . . I don't think it's going to be a full-blown meditation center. Looks like it's going to be oriented towards small groups of people. If he sets himself up as a facilitator of small Dhamma groups and not a teacher then I don't see the harm in it. I don't think it matters whether its a "full-blo...

I also HIGHLY recommend reading Analayos Satipathanna commentary. His book is available from his website https://www.buddhismuskunde.uni-hamburg.de/pdf/5-personen/analayo/direct-path.pdf He does consider how to balance the contemplations. Below are my modified notes from his book on that aspect, p....

Let's put it another way. How many meditation centers have you been to?????? If you have never been to one then are you really putting in all the effort to make one successful yourself? If you were really serious about this, then you should have researched intensively on how a successful center is r...

How exactly did Arittha practice breath meditation? "But how do you develop mindfulness of in-&-out breathing, Arittha?" "Having abandoned sensual desire for past sensual pleasures, lord, having done away with sensual desire for future sensual pleasures, and having thoroughly subdued perceptions of...

Re: New Meditation Center

It may actually be very beneficial to do a retreat in a different tradition than Vimalaramsi. Vimalaramsi's students are strongly discouraged to look elsewhere. They are only to practise with him and follow his commentary. For example, they are asked not to work with Thanissaro's translations becau...

Buddho is a mantra since it's a word repeated over and over again to aid in concentration

Re: Buddho

I have tried it and the only relevant result that I got once is that the mind started perceiving a bright white light and it sharpened the awareness quite a bit, it was not effective for me. Bhante Vimalaramsi goes further declaring it to be "wishful thinking". I think that the chances of it leadin...

Which ims teacher have you studied with? By the way I don't practice a religion! What do you say of that? Firstly I'm not sure what my experience with I.M.S has to do with the current topic at hand and so I'm going to pass on answering it. Gotta love loaded questions. I'm certainly not going to add...
