Re: Does illegal downloading violate the 2nd precept?

Will those members who are vociferous against illegal downloading and peer to peer sharing first stipulate that they have never photocopied books? :anjali: I wouldn't portray myself as "vociferous against illegal downloading". I just acknowledge what it is. Would copying part of a text book be cove...

Re: Does illegal downloading violate the 2nd precept?

I sometimes feel that the precepts are seen as laws that practitioners, like good lawyers, try to find exceptions/defenses to their violation. All you said is well and good, but it's not stealing...it's copying... If I copy something I have no right to copy, have I then advanced myself along the pa...

Re: Does illegal downloading violate the 2nd precept?

I haven't read the entire thread but as I am tired and drinking coffee, I thought I'd punch out a few lines. Intellectual property law exists to recognize that ideas, forms, designs, music, and digital creations have value to the owners and creators, and simply because a digital image or copy is eas...

It's Paul Davy's Birthday!

According to modern times' Encyclopaedia Britannica, aka Facebook ( :) ) I learned that today is Paul's birthday. He has been, and continues to be, one of the most thoughtful, knowledgeable, and kindest people on this Board and I wish him and his family a very good day, and many years to come of hap...

Re: What music are you listening to right now?

I don't listen to music anymore...the 8 precept thing....but I just walked into a coffee shop to get a strong cuppa Joe, and some classic Queen was pounding from the soundstage speakers at the House Cafe in DeKalb, Illinois.....throwback Monday for me... Mustapha, Mustapha, Ist avil ahiln avil ahiln...

Re: Evidence of reincarnation

My bias when looking at evidence comes from my lay training in law. In general, evidence is some thing or statement that meets certain tests of initial reliability (or, admissibility). Even if the fact cannot be proven to a certainty, the evidence can be accepted by the fact finder, who then determi...

Re: Live-Stream Discussion at Bodhi Institute (S. Batchelor, J. Peacock, Akincano Weber)

I didn't read through the website carefully, but with Stephen Batchelor involved, and the claim of the focus on the early Pali texts, I wonder if there's something of a Trojan Horse being wheeled into one's living room: " Bodhi Institute aspires to recover core insights of early Buddhist teachings i...

Re: Ajahn Brahm on why he was excommunicated

Obviously we dont know how reliable this message is, however I will hazard an opinion. IMHO I greatly respect Sumedho and Viradhammo for taking pains to not be influenced by Brahavamso. I think if he indicated he wishes to rescind his unfortunate actions and stop his support for improper ordination...

Re: Happy Birthday to Anagarika!

Many thanks to all of you for the birthday wishes. May all on Dhamma Wheel be well, happy and peaceful. I'm a year older, but if wiser, only due to the spiritual friendship and learned guidance of the kalyana mitta here. And Bhante, my hope is that as I grow older, my aging, bespotted and gravity im...

Re: Evidence of reincarnation

Anagarika, you seem determined to excommunicate. No, it's not that Mr. Man. At least I hope I don't come across that way. I think that reasonable people can disagree about reasonable interpretations of the Dhamma. We are all on the same "team," as it were. I usually take the view that there...

Re: Evidence of reincarnation

[quote="daverupa"]But it does mean: 1. There is no evidence it does exist. 2. The burden of proof is on the one claiming it does exist. --- So, if you're suggesting that the Buddha can't meet his burden of proof, then you would not consider yourself a "Buddhist," or one that follows the Dhamma? I th...

Re: Evidence of reincarnation

Without rebirth, we have no dependent origination, we have no teaching of kamma and its results, we have no Four Noble Truths. There's nothing about DO with literal rebirth in Ajahn Amaro's "Theravada Buddhism in a Nutshell," have a look at what he has to say under "Dependent Origination - the sour...

Re: Evidence of reincarnation

As was mentioned earlier, the Buddha not only taught the truth of rebirth ( as distinct from reincarnation) but made it central to his Dhamma. Without rebirth, we have no dependent origination, we have no teaching of kamma and its results, we have no Four Noble Truths. Right view encompasses the tru...

Re: moral dilemma flea control & no more program??

But why the suffering of cat is worth more than the life of the flea? Who knows, we might even end up keeping dogs and cats merely as food for our pet fleas, ticks and cestodes. or novice monks... Sorry, but this brought to mind the stories of some of the monasteries that trained monks some decades...

Re: moral dilemma flea control & no more program??

Reviewing Ven. Dhammanando's excellent comments, one might then resolve ( this does not derive from Bhante's comments; these are my own) to use a product that eradicates the larvae, and then use some other means to remove the live adults without killing them. In other words, is the weight of the kam...
