Re: B. Brahmali incorrect translation and interpretation of jhāna and samādhi in Vinaya scripture

That's an excellent point. It seems that Pali terms often have a wide range that can't be easily captured by a single English word. Dukkha is a classic example. Well, ye, that's an explanation. There is an interesting passage in MN 44 too (ven.Sujato trans.): ** What’s the verbal process (vaca sank...

Re: B. Brahmali incorrect translation and interpretation of jhāna and samādhi in Vinaya scripture

basically your idea of vitakka in jhāna = thinking would mean that a person has to think about something non-stop all the time while in jhāna. Indeed. More than that, this goes against the very idea of samatha, calming the mind down. Every meditator knows perfectly that any kind of thinking (even v...

Re: B. Brahmali incorrect translation and interpretation of jhāna and samādhi in Vinaya scripture

That is because rūpa jhānas are distinguished only by the jhāna factors (Buddha doesn't give any other way to distinguish between them). Actually Buddha does give it, one must look carefully for the most archaic parts (which sometimes are called "cryptic" by some as well -) From what I see these in...

Re: Do we take this lifetime knowledge to the next life?

For instance, all the Dhamma book knowledge you gathered by reading will come to an end at your death. But venerable argues that it is better to acquire the knowledge than accumulating bad Kamma. Topic is highly speculative, but cases with kids remembering their past lives give some answers. And, a...

Re: Are Therevadins the true heretics?

I challenge the Theravadins on this forum to provide proof that the Buddha taught that anything like matter exists or that everything is not imaginary, explicitly or even strongly implicitly. Here, bhikkhus, some misguided men learn the Dhamma—discourses, stanzas, expositions, verses, exclamations,...

Re: What is self view?

but I can't get a hold on what self-view means. Also, what can you practice to get rid of self-view? Self view is a view that there is some kind of unchanging "thing" in a personality or that personality itself is unchanging and/or not dependent on conditions. Practice to get rid of self-view is wi...

Re: Is there some proof that my karma can become better and so i can experience that in this life i living now?

Is there some proof that my karma can become better and so i can experience that in this life i living now? Suttas is the proof I guess. And from there one can know that bad kammic result can be lessened if your mind becomes cleaner, and yes, clean mind as it seems makes bad kamma bring result in t...

Re: Lack of progress

Also, I think we underestimate just how long this path will be for most of us. I mean, if we had done the work necessary for quick awakening and easy meditative achievements, we would have been born at the time of the Lord Buddha This, exactly. As seen from the suttas, the number of new arahants wa...

Re: Buddha did not teach12 dependent arising links

Now that we know the actual links not twelve , so it seems everything in the early texts is not that reliable . In the suttas there are many different dependent origination models, 2 links, 3 links, 5, 8, 10, 12, and even more than 12. And all of that is very reliable. 12 link model somehow became ...

I think it's all useless. After pages and pages of discussion, after hundreds of articles and books, what's changed?
The anxiety, the desire, the pain ... all this continues.
Interesting theory.

Re: Buddha did not teach12 dependent arising links

Whether or not you agree with him, there is much food for thought there. The interesting interpretation he give is that the early links are related to Vedic creation myth, so would give a sense of familiarity to the audience, but then instead of the creation of the world, DO leads to creation of du...

Any information if the beings are with rupa or No rupa ?
These are RupaLoka realms where beings, as it seems, abide in constant jhana, experiencing jhanic bliss.

Re: Canonical reference that arahants were/are doctors, firefighters, politicians, etc.?

Does anyone know of any canonical reference where arahants would be said to try to cure disease, cure the infirmities of old age, prevent famine, fight forest fires and other natural disasters, etc.?
I don't recall any.
