Re: Tipping Point: Collapse of economy and food supply

You can Google all you want, and find whatever it is you are looking for. The real question is: What is it that makes you feel the need to do it in the first place? Be able to feed people if we're caught in another ice storm or big snowfall? Alan, it's a decision you make for yourself. You need to ...

Re: Tipping Point: Collapse of economy and food supply

Even if you just look at this from a survival angle, having a gun is only going to protect you from other people. How do you plan to deal with finding drinking water, or making a fire without matches, etc.? If you'll google terms like disaster preparedness, survival skills, etc., you'll find many h...

Re: Tipping Point: Collapse of economy and food supply

If you can read his list of endnotes and still think it's an objective paper, I don't know what to tell you. It's all a bunch of data taken from "the sky is falling" documents.... FWIW, I see documents like this not as sky-falling documents, but as "we live on an edge" documents. Buddhism seems to ...

...Firstly is protection, I am not ruling roaming bands of the hungry and desperate out of the equation, and as much as I hate to say it, deterrents such as firearms are a high priority on the shopping list. I sincerely hope I never have to use them for that purpose... Hi Jack, Just my two cents wo...

Re: Meditating on the couch

Hi budo...good questions, Hi Ben...good answers :) As old age, illness and medication have crept up on me, I also choose how I will "sit." For me it is in a firm chair in front of a very sturdy desk - better to get up when I have solid support. IMHO, there's no such thing as doing it in the "wrong" ...

Re: "There was a complaint"

If you lock or delete a thread, "there was a complaint" should not be a sufficient justification. The complaint itself should always be evaluated. :) Actually, I thought that was going along better than before. Once upon a time, long ago and far away :? , it seemed the moderator just did it and no ...

Re: Defamation of Religion

Thank you for the story site, Bikkhu. The point of this discussion, as I understand it, is defamation of religion. But I think it, once again, illustrates the differences between what is taught by monks to monks and the different world that the lay person deals with. There are countries and religiou...

Re: Defamation of Religion

Well said, Kim. I actually had a death-threat intimidation laid on me some years ago by one of the very fundamentalist types, in a state where attempted and successful abortion doctor asassination attempts took place. FBI got the ring of religious stateside supporters who helped the assassin escape ...

Re: Is halloween dead?

Halloween is not dead, though many of its minions are. And the ones that are alive are usually stirring up trouble for those who aren't - bubble bubble, toil and trouble.... :stirthepot:

A comforting thought (for me at least) is that Halloween will be here long after we are all gone.

Almost right, Individual ;) I'll skip the puns that come to mind and just relate my experience with Chi Gung. The older I get the more I a...

Re: Good news today

Thanks, evereyone, for your kind words and wishes.

It's interesting to note that there was no "self" visble in the MRI or any of the other tests. But there was clearly a brain there, which pretty well shot what the wife says from time to time :)

Good news today

Hi everyone, Some of you know that I had a brain tumor removed this past spring and have been on cancer treatment ever since. Today was the second big checkup and it was clean. There was no sign of the tumor or any new growth. I'll remain on cancer treatment for many months, with major checkups ever...

Re: something endures unchanged for at least a certain interval

Careful, you may be surprised! There are at least a couple of people with PhDs in Buddhist studies and similar on this thread. I doubt I'd be very surprised :) I've seen a couple of posters with what appears to be good experience with working philosophy. There are a couple I'd suspect of h...
