Re: Problems with "9 Essays: Buddhism & The 12 Steps"

To the idea I haven't "humanized" my presentation enough: REBT, CBT, etc... are based in humanism . It is a false dichotomy that wants to separate the rational from the human. Ellis also distinguished REBT from rational ism . To the issues of powerlessness, absolute surrender, over-reliance on the g...

Re: Problems with "9 Essays: Buddhism & The 12 Steps"

may I ask how many addicts you know personally? Hundreds. So, this means the came from all 'sides': non 12 step that worked, non 12 step that did not work, 12 step that worked, 12 step that did not work and each single one of them shared her/his personal experience with you over many years? :anjali...

Re: Problems with "9 Essays: Buddhism & The 12 Steps"

Hi all,
The Big Book and personal experience in AA are much less authoritative sources than the research I've cited (especially in my blog) which inidicates most people who recover do it alone, without the help of support groups, or any recovery programs.

Re: Problems with "9 Essays: Buddhism & The 12 Steps"

Hi all, In retrospect I realize I probably gave the impression that I think SMART Recovery is the only alternative to 12 Step programs. I apologize. In reality, the alternatives to AA are countless (including Rational Recovery, Life Ring, psychotherapy, religious devotion, some combination of these,...

Re: Problems with "9 Essays: Buddhism & The 12 Steps"

Hi chownah, It could be that a bit of controversy actually helps people engage the thought process.... I think the Buddha (see Thanissaro's Skill In Questions ), Habermas (public discourse) and J.S. Mill (free exchange of ideas), et al would agree. Also, if you look through my posts, I'm reasoning i...

Re: Problems with "9 Essays: Buddhism & The 12 Steps"

Hi Tilt and Justsit, I find what I'm doing here very humanizing and humanistic. I can't control other people's perceptions, and I'm not sure what you think I think "in my favor" is here (putting a "human face" on anything digital is rather difficult)? I'm not ignoring AA at all and the links I've re...

Re: Problems with "9 Essays: Buddhism & The 12 Steps"

Hi Justsit, Is someone trying to force you to go?? No, but I have extensive personal experience with AA. Every meeting I've ever attended has been voluntary, and the same goes form the SMART Recovery meetings I now go to instead. Kindly, dL The problem is in how you are coming across here. The inun...

Re: Problems with "9 Essays: Buddhism & The 12 Steps"

Hi m0rl0ck I have a good friend who is a recovering alcoholic and I've seen the addict's mind at work where suddenly all the past lapses are forgotten and the taboo against alcohol consumption appears as a horrible and unnecessary injustice against oneself. It doesn't take much to lapse at times lik...

Re: Problems with "9 Essays: Buddhism & The 12 Steps"

Could the crusade be to find the truth?........and to eschew obfuscation? chownah I think the "truth" has already been found, and we are being told what it is, in no uncertain terms. Obfuscation? All the words, all the articles and studies, but very little actual humanity. What is at stake here are...

Re: Problems with "9 Essays: Buddhism & The 12 Steps"

Hi bodom, I am not understanding this apparent crusade against AA. I agree that what you are experiencing is a misunderstanding based on appearances. But this is not a "crusade." It is my observation of current evidence. Would you mind specifying what exaclty makes you think it's a "crusade"? Becau...
