Re: Meat problem, conflict between Theravada and Mahayana

We have to be realistic. If I stopped eating meat from today, does it mean that less animals will be slaughtered for meat? No, because the vast majority of people eat meat. My decision not to eat meat will have zero impact on the number of animals killed for meat. The lay Buddhist’s precept of absta...

Re: Meat problem, conflict between Theravada and Mahayana

I used to think the same way about mahayana monks/nuns. But many people in East Asia only know Mahayana Buddhism when they were growing up. So we should have compassion for mahayana monks/nuns who sincerely practise what they believe is true Buddhism. At least they are keeping the precepts, so they ...

Re: Meat problem, conflict between Theravada and Mahayana

Meat was not a problem for Buddha. The person who thought meat was a problem was Devadatta.
Buddha said dont kill, he did not say dont eat meat.

Re: Is this a fair critique of goenka?

Nobody is free from critiques, not even the Buddha, Ajahn Chah or Mahasi Sayadaw.
We should examine the validity of the critcisms instead of shooting the messenger.
Any teacher worth his salt should be able to withstand criticisms.

Re: Is this a fair critique of goenka?

Thank goodness , I managed to find someone willing to critique goenka. During this retreat I did not find SN Goneka's talks particularly insightful nor did they stray beyond the average of what is typical of any Theravadan Buddhist or Insight Meditation Society ten-day retreat. His discourses covere...

Re: Is this a fair critique of goenka?

The main purpose of this thread is to hear alternative views. I have personal friends who are followers of goenka. They have discussed with me at length about why they feel goenka is the best. I have attended the 10-day goenka retreat. I have also learned meditation from other teachers. I am interes...

Re: Is this a fair critique of goenka?

Would any bikkhus care to chip in?
Esp concerning how goenka preaches the superiority of his 'technique'.
Is it consistent with the suttas?

Re: What is your opinion of Mahayana?

Tell that to the mahayana monks.
It is very important to them.
In fact if you include garlic in the diet, then the meal is considered non-vegetarian.

Re: What is your opinion of Mahayana?

IIt is true that many traditional Mahayana Buddhists consider garlic unhelpful to monastic life. I don’t rule out the possibility that garlic and other herbs could have certain effects on the body. It is similar to many people who claims that a vegetarian diet makes them calmer. However, what bother...

What is your opinion of Mahayana?

What is your opinion of Mahayana? Esp the popular schools eg pure land. A view that I often encounter is that it is incorrect to consider Theravada more authentic than Mahayana. Mahayana is seen as more progressive because it adds new sutras. Also, many think that Mahayana is less selfish because it...

Re: The Social Expectations that Stifle Ordination

I have the same problem ie my family doesnt understand/object. I believe you have to follow your heart. Try it , if it doesnt suit you , you can always quit. There is a story about how rare it is to be born a human and hear the dhamma. It is rare to be reborn in the realm of human beings because thi...

Re: Is it okay for monks to wear amulets?

I believe that monks should not be carrying and distributing amulets. But ajahn jumnien is regarded as one of the great masters. So its very confusing for me.
