Re: Tell me.. why so much emphasis on this or that tradition..

As someone who was exposed to mahayana buddhism first. I now realise there is something seriously wrong with mahayana schools such as pure land. All you have to do is chant 'amitabha' and you will be born in the western paradise where nibbana is virtually guaranteed. Can we call that Buddhism? At th...

Re: Can a monk who disrobe reordain?

could it be ven Dhammavuddho? Hi Bankei, they are essentially the same except wording! I double checked with a contact of mine yesterday, but I do remember seeing a booklet made by a by a former monk ordained in the Dharmagupta tradition then within the Theravadin tradition, and the order is slightl...

Re: Goenka retreat- aversion towards Chanting

I am well aware of Goenka's stature. I am not saying this to condescend Goenka. However, if you get to listen to his actual chanting, it is nothing like what monks chant. To me, it was indeed distracting and distressing. I maintain that an experienced monk should listen to the recording and give us ...

Is this accurate?

I have been reading the book 'DHAMMA DISCOURSES' by ven sayadaw Ashin Jatila of myanmar. On pg 97, 'Buddha told Subhadda before his parinibbana, "Even after my passing away if all the devotees, whether monks or laymen, follow the instructions contained in my discourses and practise VIPASSANA MEDITAT...

Re: Bowing to lay teachers

I would like to quote Godwin samararatne, a well known meditation teacher.
'Dont call me teacher, consider me a peer who is also learning the dhamma
together with you'

Thanks for the all the comments.
What is the rationale for this rule?
Is it purely to discourage monks from breaking the rules?

When a monk has broken major rules, he is forced to disrobe.
Can he become a monk again?

If you dont mind travelling to Asia, I can recommend a
meditation centre. It is run by a burmese monk who was
a doctor. he speaks english.
You dont have to be a monk to live at the centre, but you
do have to keep 8 precepts.

cheers.

Re: The middle way between accepting or fighting illness

I used to have the same problems.
Obviously, your lifestyle is not working for you.
I solved my problem by completely changing my lifestyle.
I quit my job and work form home, flexible hours.

You need to change your life.
Long term insomnia is not good for you.

Re: Goenka retreat- aversion towards Chanting

The recordings played at the retreat are not proper chanting.
Its a lot of mumbling and moaning by Goenka,
I found it very disturbing.
Does anyone have the recording?
We should ask a knowledgeable monk what the content is.
