I don't think that believing in Karma is important issue at all. Teachings of Buddha are equally understandable and clear even if someone doesn't believe in Karma. Maybe Buddha mentioned Karma in his teachings just because it was common belief in his country.

From my point of view, Mahayanist criticism of Theravada makes no sense at all. When western non-Buddhist scholars first studied Buddhism, their description of Theravada was "Buddhism", description of Mahayana was "Mahayanist sects", and description of Tibetan Buddhism was "Lamaism".
