Re: Over confidence in our understanding of Suttas

It isn't a matter of saying "if it's scripture, toss it aside", nor is it a matter of "if it's scripture, it's the Truth". The Kalama Sutta is remarking on the various places people either outsource their critical faculties or give up their energetic investigations by resting on spurious foundations...

Re: Incomplete N8P and awakening, or 8 in 5?

I think conviction... discernment are qualities of a stream-entrant, not qualities leading to stream-entry - emergent properties, if you like. They aren't components of practice so much as they are descriptions of a noble trainee at a certain stage of training. Besides the sutta to which you've refe...

Re: Incomplete N8P and awakening, or 8 in 5?

As you know, N8P is said to be required for stream entry. Association with people of integrity is a factor for stream-entry. Listening to the true Dhamma is a factor for stream-entry. Appropriate attention is a factor for stream-entry. Practice in accordance with the Dhamma is a factor for ...

The comments below the blog entry make for a more comprehensive read, and offer considerable challenges which the blog author meets with varying degrees of success. I encourage a thorough examination of the many points discussed.

As can happen during tonics time on a retreat, maybe everyone was sitting around the dark chocolate and marshmallows and began shooting the breeze, as opposed to discussing the Dhamma, whereupon the Buddha peace'd out.

Re: I really need to find a job

There was a thread once upon a time that discussed the propriety of being a server in a restaurant and having to deliver alcohol according to the requests of the patrons. I suppose working as a clerk in a convenience store or grocers might, to some, be a gray area when, for example, someone brings a...

Re: Satipaṭṭhāna Sutta and Anapanasati Sutta

Is there any evidence that other versions of the satiptthana sutta don't have the refrain after each method? In short, yes, although I expect it isn't a smoking gun so much as an argument with merits. Read the book to discern the evidence, as laid out by the author, for yourself. It's free, and you...

A similar method eradicates cigarette cravings, in case people think nicotine cravings are 'too strong' for such a practice to work.

Re: Strange sensation during meditation

Walking meditation might be more useful here. Instead of counting breaths, count steps, and turn around when getting to 10 or 20 or so. Maybe someplace in the yard, although an apartment will do, where you can walk between two markers and thus not even bother with counting - instead, focus on the fe...

Agreed, with a caveat: stick with one method for a month or three and stay focused on only that method for that time. It's the only way to isolate effective phenomenological variables amongst various methods.

1. This body is me, it is what I am.
2. This body is mine.
3. This body is one facet of me.
4. Because of this body, I am.

So too with feelings, perceptions, sankhara, and vinnana. For example:
