Re: Favorite Metta technique

I ignore gender and get to a place where the people around me (I practice this in public) are encompassed as 'people'. Then, having done kayanupassana with anatomy for a long time now, I envision them as, basically, very complicated water bears , and from this perspective I can have a deep sympathy ...

Re: Sensual desire

One who is aroused to practice is one of conviction , not without conviction. One aroused to practice is one with persistence aroused , not lazy. One aroused to practice is one of established mindfulness , not muddled mindfulness. One aroused to practice is centered in concentration , not uncentere...

Re: Sensual desire

Pleasant feeling that arises when one does generosity. And if someone keeps recalling this activity in his mind that will give pleasant feeling as a result, is that craving over vedana or cultivating wholesome mind state? If that is craving over vedana, why it is the same as desire for sensual plea...

Re: Sensual desire

Sense desire is desire for sight, smell, taste, touch, sounds and what is the last one? Is craving over good feeling the same as longing after sensual desire? Have a look: “Bhikkhus, there is carnal rapture, there is spiritual rapture, there is rapture more spiritual than the spiritual. There is ca...

Re: Is lying more serious than other unwholesome actions?

I reject the idea that lieing is worse then killing across the board and in all instances... 1. The Buddhavamsa is late, coinciding with the rise of Mahayana; I am less than moved by it. 2. ...and anyway, according to the Vinaya, lying is an offense of expiation; other offenses render defeat, or me...

Re: DhammaWheel Public Library Challenge

It was already begun! The university library has received a slew of such things, but of course now it's time to move on to more public realms. Do you mind telling us what library you are working on so I can add you to the list? This is the University of Utah Library; now there's the Salt Lake City ...

Re: Discussion of not self in MA 6 and AN 7.55

What to make of this? Perhaps this ? I get the sense it's something of an annihilationist koan, as it were, which is why the Buddha elsewhere slightly alters it to reflect anatta. The Chinese probably didn't grok the specifics of the local debate culture that produced it, but knew enough of the poi...

Re: between breaths and controlled breathing

I have been practicing with the earliest posts, but that didn't really work out for me. Well, I wonder about something... Some time ago I read a bit of an articele from Thanissora Bhikkhu, where he states that vipassana and samatha should be brought into balance. Yes... but of course, this is stren...

Re: DhammaWheel Public Library Challenge

Also, perhaps his Great Disciples of the Buddha & his upcoming The Buddha's Teaching on Social and Communal Harmony. It makes for a nice public library trilogy, I expect.

Re: Joke!!!

I was talking to some nurses earlier & commented that I thought wound care was the most fascia-knitting part of their jobs.

Haha!? They groan-laughed and rolled their eyes.
