Re: Dhamma Poetry

Hi everyone, I've taken an interest in Dhamma poetry and was wondering if any of you could recommend some poets I could check out. I don't mind which school of Buddhism it comes from, or even if it's not Buddhist but rings true (I really like some of Rumi's work). I look forward to your rep...

Buddha was 6 feet 7?

Hello Dhamma friends. Some of you may or may not find this interesting. II. Controversial points: Sugata measures. The Commentary to Sg 6 states that the Buddha's cubit — the distance from his bent elbow to the tips of his fingers — was three times that of a normal man. This puts all the sugata meas...

The Buddha With The Sapphire Eyes

"Nobody knows when this statue was made; but it is certainly more than a thousand years old." ...The guide quietly went out behind me and sat on the steps of the verandah, and I was left alone with the Buddha. The face of the Buddha was quite alive; he was not looking straight at me, and yet he saw...

Re: The Origins of Mahayana

Hi I am interested in early Buddhism and the latest theories regarding the emergence of the Mahayana. Recently there have been a number of studies published and I am just wondering if anyone is up to date on all this - I just haven't got the time (or access) to read the vast amount of materials out...

Re: Who is your favorite great disciple?

Who is your favorite disciple of the Buddha'? I would have to say Angulimala. A mass murderer who turned his life around upon hearing the Dhamma. My favorite part of the Angulimala Sutta: Then the robber Angulimala spoke this verse to the Blessed One: 'While walking the recluse says "I have stopped...

Re: Buddha's skin colour

Hi there. According to the Pali Canon, the historical Buddha is said to have "Blue Eyes". We can still find blue/green eyes amongst Northern Indians today. Few samples: If you accept the literal word of the 32 marks (and there is no indication to do so according to the Pali Canon), then the color i...

Re: Captions needed for the Pictorial Biography of Buddha

Not really to my taste. They aren't to my taste either. To me they look like an attempt to "Krishna-ize" the Buddha. I'm surprised that they didn't try to depict him holding a flute while they were at it... These pictures look more similar to Hindu art than to Buddhist art to me. Shakyamuni Buddha'...

Was it dark like that of modern Indians or white as he is usually portrayed? Hi there. According to the Pali Canon, the historical Buddha is said to have "Blue Eyes".
