Re: Why the wealthiest person not buddhist ?

This is applicable only for monks not lay people. But if lay person maintain and develop his greed (by indulging in buying objects and hi-tech sens pleasures) how it fits with 4NT and 8NP with a Right Intention of renounciation? There is some exceptions but I think that buddhists are bad clients an...

Re: recollecting past lives

I think we can trust our memories We can't trust our 6 senses, how can we trust memories? Sorry, just reflections... For those who have mental problems or physical illness it is a distress not knowing the reasons for their sufferings. According to scriptures, indulging in intoxicants such as alcoho...

Re: recollecting past lives

Hello: It depends on the inclinations of that person and his past merit. Some people seem to remember his past life without doing any meditation, even a couple of lifetimes. But meditators have the potential to remember aeons, even several contractions and expansions of the universe/ millions of li...

Re: recollecting past lives

If you have trouble recalling what you did when you were 1 year old, imagine what it'd take to be able to recall your many past lives. The mind must be exceedingly still and bright to attain such capability. Hence even after 1st or 2nd jhanas, it's still not strong enough to get there. Only after t...

Re: Why the wealthiest person not buddhist ?

A lot of people who are wealthy have merit but they don't necessarily have the wisdom to see the incredible value of dhamma or the nature of samsara.

Re: I'm not satisfied with my meditation.

I noticed some improvement in my meditation session this morning. I sat contemplating metta for about 20 minutes and then went into following the breath for about 40 minutes for a total of one hour. This is pretty good for me considering I was having a very tough time in the not so distant past. I n...

recollecting past lives

Ajahn Brahm teaches that one may recollect one's past existences after coming out of jhana. There must be ways to remember past lives without having attained jhana. Are there other teachers with different methods?

Thanks.

Re: I'm not satisfied with my meditation.

When I do samatha meditation I just focus on the breath sometimes in conjunction with the mantra "buddho" as taught in the thai forest tradition. I don't think it makes my condition worse but I'm not getting the concentration I would hope. Of course, as I said, I have challenges.

Re: I'm not satisfied with my meditation.

http://www.acejaw.net/Buddha/Article/MongHtaungYogi.pdf When I read articles like this I hear of meditators experiencing memories of 11 of their most recent past lives and taking a tour of the deva realms. I know it's not good to strive after such experiences for their own sake but this was just thr...

Would the samatha based vipassana method of Myanmar be similar to that taught in the Thai forest tradition?
