Re: The reason im not Theravada

Because I don't really think that arhatship or nirvana exists, or that the jhana's are much worth pursuing [for their sake alone.] Not that I understand how these constitute a reason to ignore Theravada, or even what being Theravadin is, but beliefs about the unexperienced aside... what are you doi...

Re: The reason im not Theravada

Still nonetheless on the mahayana path there are many stages. The way Theravada understands the bodhisattva path is not, I dont think, the way the Mahayana understands it. Just in the same way that the way Mahayana understands hinayana is not the way Theravada understands "Hinayana". In order to att...

Re: The reason im not Theravada

"afflictive obscurations" --that is new to me. I know the meaning of both words but have never seen then put together. Is this a Tibetan thing? This the result of Jeffery Hopkins' crappy, hyper-polysyllabic translations of Tibetan which have afflicted Tibetan phraseology ever since. in this case it...

I really need to find a job

Hi all,
I recently graduated from University (degree in religion and philosophy), moved into my own apartmen, and now I really need to find a job to support myself. Are there any suggestions on jobs in accordance with a Buddhist lifestyle and right livelihood?

Sincerely,
Tamdrin

Re: The reason im not Theravada

I simply havn't heard any convincing arguments proving that nirvana is ... anything other than the absense of mental afflictions perhaps. I would agree that nirvana is the cessation of afflictive obscurations. Just that. Period. In Mahayana it is taught that you have to rid yourself of afflictive o...

Re: The reason im not Theravada

Self is one extreme, non self is another extreme. This is beyond the four extremes of existence, non existence both or neither. I think we do know what we are talking about. Natural nirvana is recognition of the suchness (thatata) of samsara. THere is no other Nirvana, as in place, state, or thing....

The reason for your statement may be some sort of agitation. It is not wise to reject any of the Buddha's teachings. Even as Maha...

Re: The reason im not Theravada

What is more weird about Nibbana than there is about Dhammakaya? I do not see that Nibbana is defined as a "state" with certain characteristics, but just as the end of the path, the cessation of suffering, which for me is quite an acceptable concept. But what is Dhammakaya? To me this notion seems ...

perkele wrote:So what are buddhas in your understanding, as opposed to arhats?

Buddha's are fully awake as they have realized the nature of their own mind which is the dhammakaya (dharmakaya?) Arhat/Nibbana is, for me, just some weird state that I don't think exists.

Re: The reason im not Theravada

Yeah but after you have no mental afflictions, then what? You go into the cessation of aggregates which is nothingness? That is the trouble I have beleiving exists, that non existence does not exist - there is always something, thus the trouble with the concept of arhats/ nirvana although I have no ...

Why have you lost the philosophers spirit, in favor of religious zeal? I simply havn't heard any convincing arguments proving that nirvana is an kind of permanent cessation, anything other than the absense of mental afflictions perhaps.
