Re: Does rūpa ever mean only 'visible sight' and not 'material [aggregate of] form'?

Are you sure about that? You might want to read that section again. This sutta is about bringing the entire mass of dukkha to and end. It's giving a complete world transcending set of instructions to understand the category, the cause, and how to escape/transcend. If the escape for rupa was just to ...

Does rūpa ever mean only 'visible sight' and not 'material [aggregate of] form'?

MN 13 is maha-dukkha-khandha sutta. The title kind of gives you a big hint when the Buddha talks about rupa and vedana in this sutta, he's probably going to be referring to the 'rupa' of 5 khandhas. Here, B. Sujato does something really strange in his Eng. translation. He translates 'rupa' has 'sigh...

Re: don't give up on jhāna yet, until you drink from the sutta cup

Here's another sutta, DN 18, that shows that first jhana is that not hard statistically. (added near end of article) https://notesonthedhamma.blogspot.com/2020/01/ajahn-brahm-and-visuddhimagga-at.html Here in DN 18, 3 ways of using vitakka to attain first jhana. And over 2 million lay followers atta...

Why did Vism.'s Buddhaghosa burn all of the Sri Lanka commentaries?

Why did Buddhaghosa burn all of the Sri Lanka commentaries? This was after he had translated it from Sinhala to Pali. I suspect there were competing schools with contradicting commentaries, and this was a move to select one school of thought and eliminate the competition. What's the official reason ...

Re: 3rd jhana is formless

I don't see how your sutta quotes are relevant to the claim you're making. I don't agree with B. Sujato's interpretation of the DN 9 passage you quote. Here is B. Thanissaro: “Poṭṭhapāda, there are these three appropriations of a self: the gross appropriation of a self, the mind-made appropriation o...

Re: anuvitakketi & vitakketi

... About anuvitakketi, could I say that if it follows proper objects then it belongs to kusala (the 4sp satipatthana formula), if it follows improper objects, then it belongs to akusala (the upper sentense) :?: I guess it depends on what you mean by 'follows'. If one is investigating akusala objec...

Re: 3rd jhana is formless

Where do you get these ideas from? All four jhanas are conscious of rupa.
In AN 4.123, first jhana leads to rebirth in brahma kayika devas/brahmas.
second through fourth jhana have their names, but I assume those are all considered brahma realms as well, made of rupa.

Re: comprehensive definition of 'sati', 'sampajano', 'vitakka & vicara', 'upekkha'

Maybe you want to start another thread? It's not clear exactly what you're after, how all of those passages you quoted are connected. One problem is B. Sujato translates 1. dhamma as 'thought' (manasa dhamma vinnaya). 2. He also translates sankappa as 'thought' and 3. sometimes vitakka as 'thought'....

Re: Pali Term: Vossagga

I guess in this case (SN 48.9 samadhi indriya) it's really important that ariya savako is a stream enterer ariya or higher, (and not just a disciple of an ariya) for vossagga/nirvana to be the support/arammana of samadhi. Then KN Ps interpretation follows naturally, that a stream enterer uses insigh...
