Re: Drug use and drug abuse

When we tread our individual Path in the dhamma, it does not help to be concerned about 'what everyone else is doing'. I both agree and disagree, because I agree it's good not to make other people's problems yours, but I think that to not speak out about an endemic problem which is harming and kill...

Re: No place for spirituality in Theravada?

Has anybody tried just being? :namaste: Being is meaningless if you don't know what it means either. :jumping: Meaningless words are funny. What do you contend that being means? Letting things stay as they are? Well that won't happen because they'll change. The nebulous meaning of "spiritual" evolv...

Re: No place for spirituality in Theravada?

What zavk said was rightly discerned and also hazy at the same time. I reject Spirituality, because I reject use of glittering generalities in general because they're used to exploit one way or another. Sometimes by EXACTLY the way that zavk got the negative association, which is by allowing him to ...

Re: Looking for a Sutta for dealing with difficult people

Oooh the Kesi Sutta was the one I was looking for, and the other ones are also brilliant! Are there more?

Looking for a Sutta for dealing with difficult people

I remembered a from the back of my mind a Sutta about dealing with difficult people, but I don't remember the title, and I was wondering if and anyone remembers a Sutta where the Buddha faced useless criticism and his response was to "Kill them" by ignoring them and other suttas like this one, becau...

Re: Drug use and drug abuse

Many Westerners like them were first drawn to Zen, and Buddhism generally, through an inconvenient lie: that meditation would induce a state similar to a drug high. There seems to be a near-consensus now that this is not the case. Now even the teachers who once advocated their use have abandoned the...

Re: No place for spirituality in Theravada?

Neither is "word". They're ultimately tools to help us understand each other, and understand the teachings, but glittering generalities can be more problematic because they're used with an agenda in mind. They are meant to mislead people. I don't like using them.

Re: Can one be a Buddhist without taking refuge in a Vihara?

True, but even in that case transportation is an issue because I cannot drive, and I am very shy, cautious, and wary to ask a stranger to carpool with me. I don't have any lay followers nearby that I know In Real Life so it will be a stranger, and I'm afraid of a cultish Vajrayana temple that is nea...

Re: No place for spirituality in Theravada?

I also found those words you used to be far more direct, truthful, and universal when it comes to practice. The word spiritual somehow to me echoes of an empty meaningless word.

Re: No place for spirituality in Theravada?

To be honest "Spiritual" is a nebulous word that is a type of glittering generality that can lead to miscommunication. A person hurt by such a word will see it as threatening. A person who finds such a word appealing will use it freely to describe whatever is in their imagination, but I think to be ...

Drug use and drug abuse

I have noticed that there's a particularly loose attitude people have been having lately toward refraining from taking intoxicants. Is it that people have forgotten that drugs are harmful or is the hedonistic self-destructive attitude to drugs becoming a greater problem in our society? What would th...
