Re: Can one be a Buddhist without taking refuge in a Vihara?

One goes for refuge to the Buddha, Dhamma and Sangha. Although the Sangha may reside in a vihara, one does not go for refuge to a vihara, and does not have to be in a vihara to take refuge. However, for both beginners and experts alike, it is very helpful and beneficial to have a real living connec...

Re: How could you cut fetter of conceit?

Aye, but acknowledging that holiness is possible, it's important to be able to understand a way to abandon conceit if one can do so. So then I ask ways to limit and abandon such conceit. Did the Buddha provide such methods, and also is my understanding of Anatta perhaps deficient?

Re: How could you cut fetter of conceit?

Māna (not to be confused with Mana; notice the different A) doesn't mean quite equate with conceit in English from what I've seen, it's just the closest translation. Because it could be positive or negative or it's not just having a favorable opinion of oneself, it's the process of measuring. Oh th...

He knows about the Four Noble Truths, and the Noble Eightfold Path, which is a great start, and I intend to teach him about the 3 marks of existence, the aggregates, and some aspects in the Abhidharma that I have read.

I hope to help him too on the road we're on. :anjali:

Re: Can one be a Buddhist without taking refuge in a Vihara?

Do you at least have any good friends or family members that are deeply spiritual? It's just me and my cousin's boyfriend who is into meditation as a practice, but isn't quite aware of the Buddhist philosophy in detail. He majored in Western Philosophy however, and I really think he and I are the m...

How could you cut fetter of conceit?

I have been told many times from many people that I am an arrogant and conceited person, and I believe there is truth to these statements because I am unabashedly confident and feel pretty certain about my discernment about aspects of reality, and also ways of living. For that I have been censured a...

Can one be a Buddhist without taking refuge in a Vihara?

I'm not a new practitioner of Buddhism, but I feel like I am still largely ignorant in the greater (more obvious) traditions and practices of Buddhists because I studied Dharma on my own and the only Vihara I ever visited (currently) with proper investigation showed to be not practicing in line with...
