Re: Buddhist Rebirth Refuted?

Hello all, Notes 42 and 43 (and 46) from Bhikkhu Bodhi's translation of the sutta: Thanks Chris for providing the notes. It is very interesting what Bhikkhu Bodhi has here. Sorry the following is a little off topic. I think you mentioned that his translation of the Anguttara Nikaya will be out next...

Re: Kalamasutta

This is extremely useful when we have no idea where to go, everything is unknown to all of us, and a few are leading the way into knowledge. Since we are all following the lead scouts (the scientists) we don't really have an option but to accept what they tells us, and turn back when told "Sorry, t...

Re: Kalamasutta

This article that Ven Gavesako mentioned in another thread: Buddhism for the Next Century Toward Renewing a Moral Thai Society by Phra Phaisan Visalo http://www.bpf.org/tsangha/phaisan.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Mike, that was an interesting read. I love this part of the art...

Re: Buddhist Rebirth Refuted?

Just found a sutta ive never come accross before and it had a very relevant teaching that i feel is relates to this topic of rebirth "Sustained by/clinging to the six properties, there is an alighting of an embryo . There being an alighting, there is name-&-form. From name-&-form as a requisite con...

Re: Is Rebirth Speculation?

If I were to say that I know that rebirth is a fact, what would it prove? To you, nothing. What is a fact to me is just that, a fact to me, but that carries no weight for you. If you do not want to believe in rebirth, then don't, but there are those who know that rebirth is a fact. Tiltbillings, I ...

Re: Is Rebirth Speculation?

Do you guys agree with Ajahn Sumedho's view that rebirth is speculative? If you do or do not, then why? --DarkDream That quote you have is from the beginning of that chapter. At the end of the same paragraph, the Ajahn writes about Ajahn Chah and his teachings on rebirth and then Ajahn Sumedho writ...

Is Rebirth Speculation?

[Moderators: I believe this post is appropriate in this sub-forum because I am presenting the view of a modern Therevada practioner. If you see otherwise and it should be in the "Dhamma Free for All" by all means move it.] In Ajahn Sumedho's book The Sound of Silence there is a chapter named, "Quest...

Re: Materialism and Physicalism

Materialism is the wrong wrong view taught by Ajita of the Hairy Blanket. It's absolutely incompatible with the Buddha's Dhamma, being the first of the four wrong views that negate the very possibility of the brahmcariya. A person consists of the four great elements. When he dies, earth returns and...

Re: Details of wrong view

Dear DarkDream, I fail to understand your objection. "There is nothing given..." is a stock passage for a view that the Buddha always disagrees with. I don't see any logic in your blog that renders it bogus just because it is used by people other than the Buddha. I think you are reading too much in...

Re: Details of wrong view

As been explained fairly well, one of the notions expressed have to do with the Vedic sacrifice and the denial that this will effect our post-mortem death. Also it is a denial of the heavens and the realm of the father's which was commonly believed you would go if the proper sacrifices were made. Th...

Re: Challenges to Buddhism and as a Buddhist

The three challenges to Buddhism as I see it: 1) A brand of fundamentalism that refuses accept ideas from modern scholarship and science and persists in holding the religious texts as the final arbiter. 2) Diluting and masking the differences between other religions and different strands of Buddhism...

Yes, good point. But I think it is essential to give a person the benefit of the doubt instead of assigning blame which essentially is what some one does when they say that a person is like this due to actions in a past life.

Re: Pali Canon - can it be attributed back to the Buddha?

I think there have been great answers to this question. Based on my reading of the Pali Canon there is no doubt in my mind that it was composed over a period of time and that different parts of it belong more or less composed in earlier or later periods. One book that attempts to do a stratification...

Re: MN Session 7 - MN 135. Cūḷakammavibhanga Sutta

Then why do some people get faulty genes while others do not? My (limited) understanding leans towards saying: because of past life volitional actions... Venerable Appicchato, I respectfully disagree. This is obviously not a science forum but there is definitive evidence that shows that radiation, ...

They are really good at scaring people by showing them vivid images of hell and hungry ghosts, for example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yuuUOHO31aY&feature=related This is probably the extreme case of literalistic interpretation...
