Re: Sutta quotes to support the idea to live is good

-The Buddha adviced on having a wholesome mind at the time of death. People who commit suicide die with a mind full of craving and aversion (may this suffering stop), unless they are arahants. People who don't commit suicide can also die with a mind full of craving and aversion (may this pain stop)...

Re: Sutta quotes to support the idea to live is good

Hello: -The value of human life “Sooner, I say, would that blind turtle, coming to the surface once every hundred years, insert its neck into that yoke with a single hole than the fool who has gone once to the nether world would regain the human state.... -The value of the last moments before death ...

Re: What comes first Sila (precepts) or(Samma Ditthi) right view?

Hello:

Right view is the forerunner of the rest of the path (including sila - right speech, conduct, livelihood).
But its not so black and white. There is right view that arises after purifying the mind with moral conduct.

Re: Semen retentive sex and Buddhist practice

Hello: Personally i think the practice of being semen retentive while having sex is foolish  . Its like being addicted to gambling, and commiting to the practice of visiting casinos, but without playing. Its a waste of effort and energy. I don´t say there is absolutely nothing to learn, but ...

Re: Is Buddhism the final hurdle?

:namaste: We crave worldly things (money, fame, power, etc.). This craving causes stress. We abandon these cravings. Buddhism also says craving must be avoided. So we feel we're on the right track. But then new cravings arise - for jhana, nirvana, peace, joy, you name it. These cravings, although s...

Re: What is Path and Fruition?

Hello: Personally, i dont think the Abhidhamma version has much sense. If the timegap between path and fruition is that small, then the Buddha wouldn´t have talked about the 8 pairs of disciples. If you want to hear other version this is one: The experience of path knowledge is when a person, out of...

Re: Dependent origination=Nirvana?

:namaste: There is no existence or non-existence. There is only dependent arising. There is no absolute reality outside of this, or beyond this. It's also said samsara=nirvana. As long as we see things as 'existing' or 'non existing', it is samsara. If we see them as dependently arising, it is nirv...

Re: Is pleasure an addition or a subtraction?

Hello, I think I read somewhere that the Buddha was quoted saying that ultimate bliss is the lack of any perception, or something along those lines. This led me to wonder about experiences of pleasure in daily life. When I look at a beautiful landscape and derive a sense of pleasure from it, does m...

Re: At which link or stage does the self view , conceit and ignorance ends

Dear members , If one follows dependent origination , at which link do you think should the self view , conceit and ignorance get eliminated ? What were the sequence accordingly , eliminating greed first or self view first , conceit first or ignorance first ? At which link conceit being abandoned ?...

Re: Abortion poll

Hello: Science, because its hard to tell when consciousness starts, decided to establish "feeling pain" as the moral limit of abortion. But, current science doesn´t even know if insects feel pain or not !!, so i dont take seriously any discussion in terms of science regarding this issue. Dhamma goes ...

Re: How did Aṅgulimāla clear the vast amounts of dark karma he incurred by murdering hundreds of innocents, in a few yea

Hello: Angulimala had a lot of potential: he came from a good family, was physically very strong, was the top student at a top university, and prior to his murders he was very pleasant and with many good qualities in his personality. So he was a strong seed, but grew badly. Most of the kamma made by...

Re: Do you have body pain in First Jhana?

Hello: You can have body pain in the first jhana, but its not going to really shake your mind. If you couldn´t have body pain in the first jhana, the buddha while having back pain wouldn´t need to abide in the signless concentration of mind, he could just abide in the first jhana. "Now I am frail, A...

Re: Why did the Buddha meditate ???

Hello: I think thats a misunderstanding of what the buddha meant by "mental defilements", and what it means to destroy the taints. The Buddha was an arahant, his taints where destroyed, he had a mind rid of barriers...no more greed, hate or delusion, no more restlessness arising ever again in his min...

Re: The Dhamma and Science

How do we approach Suttas which go against current scientific knowledge? For example, modern science tells us that a Big Crunch and a cyclic universe is impossible due to the increasing rate of expansion of the universe. The only two options are the Big Rip or the Big Freeze. This contradicts the s...

Re: Liking and disliking people

Hello:

Emm no, you can like some people more than others.
But you should avoid cravings: lust or aversion towards friends/enemies.
The friend[56] has passed away,
The Master, too, has gone.
There is no friendship now that equals this:
The mindfulness directed bodywards.
