Re: Pūjā = Worship?

I agree that the English term worship is too closely linked to Christian theology to be an accurate reflection of what Buddhists and Hindu's do when they recite suttas, garland statues, and place offerings etc. We don't puja, we do puja to the Triple Gem. However, I don't think we can have a concise...

Hi guys, not sure if this adds any light to the subject. This was covered on a Thai talk show. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z63YdzMzBsY&feature=youtu.be https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UlvSz6Dyfrw&feature=youtu.be https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SY4xarkCm_s&feature=youtu.be https://www.youtube.co...

Re: How did you come to Buddhism? (poll)

My journey to Buddhism Largely raised by my Muslim grandparents, I never felt much of a connection to theism in general. Having bible study in public school and then attending madrassa in the later afternoons just raised more questions. I was never deeply invested in any form of theism. I went throu...

Re: Most want Supreme Patriarch appointment deferred

Hi guys Following the Wat Phra Dhammakaya related news here (like many other here) for a number of years, I've come to realize that issues of monastic corruption are far more complex that many here would admit. Has no one noticed that these issues are primarily related to monastic privilege and pat...

Re: Taking Refuges

Dear Friends Although I lead a life quite dedicated to Buddhist practice I dont take the refuges because I think they are not making much sense just as a theoretical thing, in the Suttas it seems that students take the refuges after they have had an understanding or attainment are there instances i...

Thailand's Bhikkhunis

Short but insightful documentary. It doesn't cover the complex issues involved, but is still worth the time.

Re: Buddhism and fallacies of idol worship

Quite true, people are indeed in a different stages of development. If we look at humans, young will play with dolls or toys, but grownups will not... Not to be confrontational, but the above statement is a bit offensive to me. (I'm African) Are you saying African and Asian people are like children...

Re: Buddhism and fallacies of idol worship

I don't think that this quite works as an argument that Buddhists wouldn't count as idol worshippers in the eyes of Muslims... I thought I clarified that by saying that Buddhists can only be seen as idol worshippers by others. Muslims would be included in 'other'. But you also wrote: [Buddhists] ca...

Re: Buddhism and fallacies of idol worship

To judge from the OP's article, this thread has to do with the Islamic (or at least one Muslim's) assessment of Buddhism and not with a Buddhist assessment of Islam. Please stay on topic. To repeat my critique of that assessment: (I) It is meaningless to a Buddhist, because Buddhists do not have an...

Re: The problem with cultural appropriation

It is a selfish practice. Speak for yourself, thepea. For the rest of us the practice is selfless. I agree, in fact the Buddha often said when we seek our own welfare through restraint of body speech and mind, it actually benefits others as well. It's clear there's a lot of counterfeit dhamma prese...

Re: The problem with cultural appropriation

The irony here is you are not cultureless. Precisely why I put "silly, cultureless" in quotes. I was being sarcastic. So there is nothing ironic with what I said. You cannot separate western understanding of Buddhism from the colonial powers that encountered it.. How exactly do you know what I unde...
