Re: Thoughts about criticism

Easily seen are the faults of others, Hard indeed to see are one's own; The faults of others you bring to light Like winnowing the chaff, But your own faults you cover up As the trickster conceals a losing throw. Those who always find fault with others, Who criticize constantly, Their own cravings w...

Re: False emotions and Vocal acrobatics

I enjoy music but no longer crave it. "Desire ultimately breeds fear and sorrow, but renunciation gives fearlessness and joy. Just as perception influences thought, so thought can influence perception. The Buddha does not offer as a solution the method of repression — the attempt to drive desire awa...

Annabel "if you are a classical music fan, because those often have a distinct aversion against "jungle music". :smile: I prefer Bach over Beethoven, this just is my personal taste, no aversion. However, if I spent my time hyping up the anti, proselytizing for or against and going out of my way to ...

Metta,
Retro. :)
Christopher::: asked a question -
Is aversion always a "bad" thing?
On that basis, I and others responded, that's all.

Re: Michael Jackson (August 29, 1958 – June 25, 2009)

There are no sensible reasons for hate. Avoiding a person is one thing; having aversion for a person however is a manifestation of one's hate. It causes distress and puts an end to discernment. It's abandonment is recommended out of compassion. Na hi verena veráni sammantídha kudácanam; verena ca s...

Re: Michael Jackson (August 29, 1958 – June 25, 2009)

While i think we should try to be nonjudgmental about Michael Jackson, putting ourselves in his shoes, i think that courtesy should also be extended to folks who feel some aversion towards him, when there are sensible reasons for that. Is aversion always a "bad" thing? :namaste: I never was a Micha...

Re: Michael Jackson (August 29, 1958 – June 25, 2009)

Those that jump on this opportunity to follow the urge to find fault and spread dislike, seem (to me) to be as smitten with MJ as are his fans. MJ was impermanent, his bad behavior - impermanent. He may not have been perfect, but dukkha arises from our own negative reactions, not from MJ. If you rea...

Metta is characterized as that which "promotes welfare." Its function is to "prefer well-being" rather than ill. It manifests as a force that "removes annoyance" and its proximate cause is the tendency to see the good side of things and beings and never the faults. Just as with her own life A mother...

Absurd because they all miss the point. Bhante Gunaratana, from Eight Mindful Steps to Happiness When we purposely kill living beings, even small creatures like insects, we diminish our respect for all life - and thus for our selves. Mindfulness helps us to recognize our own aversions and to take re...

Pres. Obama swatted a fly during an interview, killing it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5rbUH_iVjYw" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; And then PETA responded.
