Re: Lifespan of beings in the hell realm

Thanissaro: "I was given a lecture a while back by someone who was quoting an academic, saying that 'to say that there is a right Dharma and a wrong Dharma is very dangerous thing'. The analogy they gave was, 'the Dharma is like a map, everyone's Dharma is like a different map and as we know all ma...

Re: Lifespan of beings in the hell realm

Aloka, I've found the teachings which point to the possibility of rebirth in the lower realms as a truly valuable contribution to my daily life and practice. Obviously this may not be the case for you but there is no denying it is in the suttas and is of value to a number of lay followers and monas...

Re: Lifespan of beings in the hell realm

Personally, I think that speculating about hell realms can be the cause of an unnecessary mental hell in the here and now. This is from the historian and Pali scholar Richard Gombrich in "Kindness and Compassion as a Means to Nirvana in Early Buddhism": The fully developed Buddhist cosmology does a...

Bhante,

Re: Facebook advertising for publicity... Money well spent?

You're right Bhante, $80 is cheap. Not sure where you're located but Craigslist is also a good way to get the word out.

Re: Facebook advertising for publicity... Money well spent?

Meetup was very successful but the costs can be quite high (~$80 for 6 months).

Re: Facebook advertising for publicity... Money well spent?

Bhante,

I've seen very little return on paid reach with FB. I tried it with our FB page for Manhattan Buddhist Mediation and was underwhelmed. We had better results with Dhammadarini's campaign to fund their new vihara but this was with a video (FB love's native video content).

Re: Facebook advertising for publicity... Money well spent?

Bhante, I have done it for a number of Buddhist organizations as well as my own business. In my opinion it is a waste of money. You will actually get more leverage if you were to contact everyone who is your friend and ask them to share the event. In order to keep news-feeds from being clogged with ...

Re: Precepts for Personal Practice

I like your list, KB. Not being alone with a woman other than my partner is not something that I would take on (having worked at Uni before, I was alone plenty of times with my students during consultation hours and now I share an office with a female colleague). I guess for me, it's ultimately the...
