Re: How Buddhism inspired David Hume

According to Christopher L. Beckwith there may be a connection Buddha > Pyrrho > Hume. I recommend reading his book, "Greek Buddha". Some of his assertions are controversial, but still interesting. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Greek-Buddha-Pyrrhos-Encounter-Buddhism/dp/0691166447/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=...

Re: Reading just the Tipitaka

Enjoy the Pali suttas. Here is a site where you not only find the texts in Pali, but also in several translations. Comparing different translations can be useful, but most useful of all is to read the Pali texts themselves.

Chakras are a Hindu teaching from the Yogic tradition, which has infiltrated some Buddhist traditions. Just ignore it, and learn what the Buddha actually taught.

Re: The Buddha spoke pali by Stefan Karpik

I have heard that in some remote parts of Norway near the Swedish border, they speak Norwegian with a heavy accent. Hop across the border, and they speak Swedish with a heavy accent. Yet the groups on either side of the border are actually speaking in exactly the same way! Is this true? The dialect...

Re: Most Compact Pali Canon

I once got a small publication from the Buddhist Publication Society, called "Buddha-Vacanam", by Nyanatiloka Mahathera, 1968. Soft cover, only 84 pages. It contains some essential texts in Pali, and I found it very handy and useful. There also exists an English version, "The Word of the Buddha".

Re: The Buddha spoke pali by Stefan Karpik

It is very interesting to read these discussions of the language of the Buddha. The more I read of these, the more I am reminded of the language situation in Norway. We have a great variety of dialects throughout the country. The dialects are are spoken, and sometimes also written, and with a few ex...

Re: How did historical Buddha looked like?

The Vakkali Sutta gives a precise description:

"Enough, Vakkali! What is there to see in this vile body? He who sees Dhamma, Vakkali, sees me; he who sees me sees Dhamma. Truly seeing Dhamma, one sees me; seeing me one sees Dhamma."

Re: Buddhist text and the Tipitaka

Take a look at Sutta Central. There you will find the texts in the original languages and translated into several languages, all for free. Even my translations into Norwegian can be found there. They are also freely available at my own site, http://dhamma.priv.no
