Re: Alternative Forms of Vipassana

We can all agree that the most popular form of Vipassana in the world is the technique of Vipassana that is part of the lineage that descends from Ledi Sayadaw. No, we cannot agree about that. We can agree that it is the most popular in India and the West. In Burma, the Mahāsi Satipaṭṭhāna method i...

Re: Will certain Buddhists on DW please stop disparaging other faiths

Asokan Edicts Beloved-of-the-Gods, King Piyadasi, honors both ascetics and the householders of all religions, and he honors them with gifts and honors of various kinds. But Beloved-of-the-Gods, King Piyadasi, does not value gifts and honors as much as he values this -- that there should be growth i...

Re: Existentialism/Postmodernism/etc. vs Realism

It is pretty obvious that you're all just going around in circles. The purpose of the Dhamma is to slow down and put a stop to saṃsāra. What is the point of coming to a Buddhist forum just to argue the toss? Avijjāya tv·eva asesa·virāga·nirodhā saṅkhāra·nirodho; With the complete passionless cessati...

Re: Aussie Buddhists - 6 min documentery

Hugging mothers is an offense then, but less serious than using a urinal, or chewing noisily (both forbidden in the patimokkha rules). All three offences are of the same grade — offences of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa). Chewing noisily is no offence if it is unintentional. Standing up to use a urinal is n...

Re: the great vegetarian debate

In fact, it is pretty obvious that the Buddha ate meat, and allowed his monks to do so too.

See the story of General Sīha offering meat as alms, which was the occasion for the laying down of the Vinaya rule about meat-eating.

Re: Spanking Children in Buddhism

The Bodnariu Family are now reunited with their children. Such cases are not unique to Norway, although that has, I believe, a strict "No spanking" policy. Here in the UK, children sometimes get taken away without due cause, but it is much more common to hear cases of children being killed when they...

Re: Is unvirtuous Sangha an immeasurable field of merit?

There is a nice story in the Vinaya texts of a certain monk who, while walking for alms, saw a billy goat bowing his head down, and thought, “He is paying homage to me.” He soon realised that he was mistaken!
