Re: Does kamma determined our birth ?

So it is the way people live that makes them how they are, whether short-lived or long lived, sickly or healthy, ugly or lovely, insignificant or illustrious, poor or rich, in a low class or eminent family, or witless or wise. Sentient beings are the owners of their deeds and heir to their deeds. D...

Re: Insomnia

I've had issues with insomnia my whole life, and while meditation can often help with my anxiety issues, I still have real problems with falling asleep. What time of day do you eat your last meal? The Buddha ate one meal a day and this diet is catching on in modern times (one large meal around lunc...

Before he became the Buddha ... at what point in his lifestream was he considered a sotapanna?
He never was a sotapanna. The previous dispensation of Kassapa had died out and Gotama re-discovered the Dhamma. He went straight to fully enlightened arahant and samma-sam-buddha.

Re: Jhanas and Nirvana

And what is right concentration? There is the case where a monk; quite withdrawn from sensuality, withdrawn from unskillful (mental) qualities enters and remains in the first jhana . . . second . . . third . . . fourth . . . this is called right concentration (Samma Samadhi) . (Samyutta Nikaya 45.8...

Re: Slavic Buddhism vs Western Buddhism

When they want to leave, you have to insist that they stay longer (regardless if you mean it or not). If you are eating something and don't ask them to eat with you, this would be extremely rude. If they accept your offer immediately, that would be a sign of greediness, and a simple no answer does ...

Re: Jhanas and Nirvana

Should every person who is going to attain the Nirvana follow the 1-8 jhanas? Or the jhanas only work for some? For example, I know there were many who attained the Nirvana just by listening to a dhamma talk or cleaning a compond of the monastery? So I feel like working on 1-8 jhanas kinda only spe...

Re: No meta-discussion opens the door to propaganda and irresponsible behavior

As far as I understand it, a statement may be an acceptable ad hominem; if it is against another person's character and motive and it is directly related to the issue at hand. For example, a person calling out someone opposed to alcohol consumption but then noting that this same person regularly dri...

This is more appropriate for a lounge topic or possibly for an engaged Buddhist section, which we don't have here any more. Instead you could post it over at one of our sister sites:
