Re: Alan Wallace on Modern Vipassana

I was wondering why nobody brought this up this direct contradiction: from the interview http://www.tricycle.com/a-mindful-balance Q: Does the Buddha ever mention the term manasikara in his mindfulness instructions? A:Not that I know of. The term figures most prominently in Abhidhamma-based treatise...

Re: How has the Dhamma influenced your experience of sexuality?

zavk, I have discovered that the mind gets a 'non-stick' coating towards lust after abstinence of more than 1 month. Samadhi and mindfulness becomes much easier, and thoughts of lust does not enter the mind unless one (un) intentionally looks at something naughty. Your initial training in vedana is ...

RYB & All, From here http://www.buddhanet.net/budsas/ebud/ebdha163.htm Discussion by Bhante Dhammavuddho, a Malaysian forest monk: Five Occasions to Attain Ariyahood Anguttara Nikaya Sutta 5.3.26 is very interesting. It describes the 5 occasions when a person attains Ariyahood. These are: 1. Listeni...

Re: Special budget train for Buddhist sites

Hello, I wonder if we could at some point in the future arrange for a Dhamma Wheel pilgrimage, assuming there is enough interest, with both monastics and lay people. What do you guys think? With Metta, Guy I actually wanted to go with Chris & her Brisbane group on her current trip (late Feb 2010) b...

Hello Retro, all, I was driving home from a day of sutta study and meditation last night and turned the radio on just in time to hear the first note of Hallelujah, by Jeff Buckley . Had prickly shivers all over and tears in my eyes. Now ... why do I rarely get that from meditation? http://www.youtu...

Re: "Don't look down on the defilements, They will laugh at you"

Do not attach to ANYTHING, the very nature of attachment in itself brings suffering, even attachment to serenity or insight. Otherwise, one becomes a run-of-the-mill person all over again, you attain a meditation state - you're happy, you don't get it, you're stressed, worried, or doubtful, ignorant...

Re: "Don't look down on the defilements, They will laugh at you"

RYB & All, Perhaps, there is nothing wrong spiritual materialism aiming in practice for Jhana and/or progressive stages of insight, but problem I have faced in my own practice is attaching towards the end result without doing the necessary work. So I have been very guilty of hugging the sign posts o...

Sabbasava Sutta The Blessed One said, "Monks, the ending of the fermentations is for one who knows & sees, I tell you, not for one who does not know & does not see. For one who knows what & sees what? Appropriate attention & inappropriate attention. When a monk attends inappropriately, unarisen ferm...

Re: "Don't look down on the defilements, They will laugh at you"

Steve & zavk, I'm glad you both found use for it. His meditation advice has also been very valuable for me too. Do not think be fooled by his use of natural/everyday language and discard it as 'Dhamma-lite'. The technique he teaches falls under the category of 'cittanupassana' - mind aware of mind(e...
