Re: Benedictine Monk on meditation

The Carmelite tradition in the Catholic Church has always been one of meditation and contemplation. Read anything by St. Theresa of Avila and you'll get the idea. She describes states that appear to be the Jhanas. My own Church when I was younger was run by the Carmelite Fathers and so had an emphas...

Re: Legs get really numb - will it damage my legs?

I have to sit on my coffee tabe Z(pefect height) - I have bursitis in my hips and sitting cross legged - no matter how many cushions I use - results in intense pain that affects my walking about. Last time I tried cross legged practise on a regular basis I was in pain for months. Interestingly, Cath...

Re: Pali Canon Recommendation for Christmas Gift?

My personal favourite is the Samyutta Nikaya, translated by Ven. Bodhi. For some reason it speaks to me the most out of all the other Nikayas.

Re: "Common Sense" interpretation of the suttas

Well speaking quite frankly, I'll always choose common sense over over-heated frenetic philosophical gymnastics - but that's just me. And for the record, no, I don't think the Pali Suttas involve philosophical gymnastics, but other philosophies, strike me as just that - and I'm being kind by using t...

Re: A friend in need

I rescued an earthworm from drying out on a sidewalk once ...good on you Manasikara .... earthworms nourish mother earth!

Our animal companions - cats, dogs - many times I have found kinder and more compassionate than fellow human beings - they're people with fur and fangs ...

Re: How can you not fear impermanence and suffering?

Ajahn Sumedho actually addresses these issues in many of his talks which are available on-line - free of charge. His talks on "The Four Noble Truths" go into suffering and impermanence - as it affects our daily lives - quite in depth. Actually, you could pick up almost any of the booklets which comp...

Re: "Common Sense" interpretation of the suttas

The common sense approach might be to apply the practise and see what comes of it! Because, although one can hammer out quite a bit by logic, it can't all be hammered out by logic; at some point, one has to do it to know it. And this point is peppered throughout the various suttas. Kind regards from...

Re: "Common Sense" interpretation of the suttas

Your friendly neighbourhood Asura here thinking out loud. I think (if I can articulate this properly) that the experience of the 'out there stuff' is all dependent, when you pin-point it - on contact - via the 6 senses posited in Buddhism. I don't think that the Tathagata was denying that 'there's n...
