Re: Insight meditation on the 3 characteristics?

So are you saying that awareness of impermanence is "central" to vipassana, rather than awareness of non-self? You can conclude the other two characteristics by observing impermanence: "Now is what is impermanent painful or pleasant?" — "Painful, venerable Sir." — "Now is what is impermanent, what ...

brain and mind

Hi, are there any Classical Theravadin texts about the function of the brain? Or maybe even about the connection between brain and mind? I'm asking because a neighbour had an apoplectic stroke last week and now he has problems with his memory. That made me wonder how the body is able to damage the m...

Re: International Vesak Day

I will spent some days (Friday till Monday; the Vesakha Puja is on Saturday) at Muttodaya. Somehow I'm curious and a little bit afraid about it, because I've never been to a monastery befor...

Re: Tattoos in Buddhism, Acceptable or not???

I understand that there's no explicit instruction not to do it in most traditions, but it seems like such an unwise use of resources, unnecessary harm to one's own body, and affected. I thought about getting " This too will pass " (just these few words) tattooed on the back of my hand or somewhere ...

Not all...the Venerable Nyanaponika (author of the well known 'Buddhist Dictionary') sported a full beard for many years... Bhante, please excuse me for correcting a minor error, but the author of the "Buddhist Dictionary" and the monk in the middle of the picture is Nyana tiloka . Here is another ...

Re: Bhikkhuni ordination...

Thank you very much for posting this article, Bhante  I hope some Thai people will get inspired and help to reestablish the bhikkhuni sangha. May the bhikkhuni sangha get reestablished soon. May many women get the chance to walk on the path to freedom, peace and bliss as fully ordained nuns. Ma...

Re: Meritorious Meditation

Just another thought: If you make the decision to meditate, you are doing it out of compassion and loving kindness for yourself. You see your own suffering and therefore you create compassion for yourself. The determination to meditate in order to overcome this suffering is loving kindness. Besides,...
