Re: Theravadins' thoughts on the origin of the sutras?

Similary, the result of Mahayana Buddhism was a slave culture in Tibet, where human beings were supressed, enslaved and controlled by monastic masters in collusion with the ruling elite using a collection of non-Buddhist beliefs, superstitions & rituals. Can you present a source for that informatio...

Hi Retro,

It looks like we have a similar climate, extreme temperatures in Lisbon are 42º C and 0º C.

Humidity between 80% and 100% all year long.

Being on the antipodes we are now on winter, 15ºC and raining at the moment.

Re: Atheism is...

Dear manapa, I feel like there are some language issues that may be misleading, I am translating from Portuguese to English as I write, and the same word may have very different meanings in each language. Expressions which may seem to mean the same, do not; and equivalent expressions are used to exp...

Re: Atheism is...

Also, there is a difference between Common Sense and Good Sense. Good Sense would be a wise decision or evaluation of a situation, it is the same as wisdom. Common Sense is also called Vox Populi or Folklore and is the opinion shared by most people in some group of humans. The video refers to Common...

I was reading DN 31 Sigalovada Sutta http://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/dn/dn.31.0.ksw0.html , and noticed a list of a laymen responsibilities with their servants, as well as the laymen responsibilities with its employer: In five ways should workers and servants as the lower direction be respec...

Re: Atheism is...

A point missed with the use of the quote attributed to the Buddha, which does sound familiar to two different places in the Suttas (Kalama, and Dhammapada) so it is probably the translation this person used, and if it holds true to the Meaning what is the problem if it isn't how you think it should...

Re: Buddhist Economics

Hi David, My view is that no political outlook has a monopoly on the brahmaviharas or any other Buddhist virtues. I think Buddhists might with equally pure motivation, equally good conscience, and with equal fallibility, end up nearly anywhere on the political spectrum, excluding only those ideolog...

Re: Buddhism - Religion or Philosophy

The word Religion comes from the latin religio , which no one knows exactly what it meant, but most believe it is from the verb ligare , that means to connect or to bind, and the prefix re- wich indicates an idea of repetition. The romans had period events in which they would pay homage to the deiti...

Re: AN 11.13: Mahanama Sutta (six recollections)

I find these recollections very beneficial.

Recollecting the qualities of the Devas, and the actions that led to their birth on that plane of existence, gives me great confidence on the triple gem.

It also gives me a different perspective of what is experienced.
