i'd recommend reading schopenhauer on both rebirth and time in the world as will and representation book 1 and dogen (http://www.thezensite.com/ZenTeachings/ ... _Welch.htm)
i agree with russel here that metaphysical assertions derived from religious experience are pretty worthless.

bhavana society is founded by a sri lankan monk. there are some burmese monateries, but seem to usually have only burmese monks. there's sitagu in austin and one in santa cruz mountains (forgot the name, but it seems more practice oriented) of coures, there's a lot of great thai forest monasteries. ...

yeah i did retreats or practice in all those traditions i mentioned. i am in chiang mai, so the place you mention is pretty close. i like that the retreat is 21 days. i have no fixed city, but i'm finishing up at berkeley in three months, so after SE asia i'll be there a while. :namaste:

hello, i made it out of berkeley and into thailand. what are some good retreats to do here? any less obvious? i am just studying and living on cheap guesthouses in paradise. i will probably meditate on my own, and go to a monastery where the teacher only really speaks thai, but i wouldn't mind a tea...
