Re: Ajahn Buddhadasa

Highly read & influential teacher, both in the West & Thailand. For example, many Abbots of Thai & Western Monasteries have studied his teachings, including Ajahn Chah. Absolutely, he is greatly respected and quoted frequently ....for example on various pages of the book "The Island" written by Aja...

Re: Form is emptiness

I am tempted to post the entire sutta here but it is a bit too long for that...I'll just bring one small part but I do hope that you will take a look at the link because I think you will see a much closer representation of the mahayana concept of "form is emptiness" than can be found in the "empty ...

Re: Form is emptiness

The only place I have seen the term "emptiness" in a sutta is in one that talks about the emptiness release or somthing like that but even this is explained in term of being empty of self as I remember. It's probably SN 41.47: On one occasion Ven. Godatta was living near Macchikasanda in the Wild M...

Re: Form is emptiness

To quote Santikaro in "Early Buddhism and the Heart Sutra" (written in 2006) which I mentioned earlier in the topic: The Heart Sutra is probably the most widely know and studied of the Mahāyāna sutras thanks to its concise brevity and profundity. It wonderfully recasts core teachings from the Pali s...

Re: Form is emptiness

Does any Theravadin here believe that the Mahayana Suttras are the words of the Buddha? Here's an article written a number of years ago about the Northern and Southern traditions by Ajahn Amaro, who's the Abbot of Amaravati Theravada Thai Forest Tradition monastery UK: The View from the Centre: htt...

Re: Form is emptiness

Does the phrase 'form is emptiness' have any place in Theravada? I believe it's from the heart sutra which is a Mahayana suttra. Another example : https://www.dhammatalks.org/suttas/SN/SN22_95.html You might also find this article of interest: Early Buddhism and the Heart Sutra: http://www.liberati...

Re: Mindfulness v Meditation

. "Mindfulness is the Path to the Deathless" ...a short Dhamma article by Ajahn Amaro. Excerpt: When the Buddha said that ‘… the mindful do not die’, he did not mean that the body of a mindful person is never going to stop breathing and rot away. No. The Buddha’s body died, just like anyone else’s. ...
